Thomas M. Rushing was the son of Abraham Rushing, the eighth child named in his father's will.[1] Thomas was born about 1775 in Anson County, North Carolina. (He was 16 years of age or older in 1790;[2] between the ages of 16 and 25 in 1800;[3] 45 or older in 1820,[4] all of which agree on a bith date of about 1774 or 1775. Ages reported in later census records are consistently less than 10 years greater than the previous census, casting doubt on their reliability.)
In 1790 and 1800, Thomas, along with his brother Peter, appears to be living with his father in Anson County, North Carolina.[2][3]
Marriage and Children
Thomas married after 1800, a woman named Elizabeth. (She is named in his will, and her will suggests that she was the mother of most if not all of his children.) There are claims that she was named Elizabeth Thompson, but so far no evidence has been provided. It has also been said that her family name was Jones, again without documentation.[5]
Ten of Thomas and Elizabeth's children were named in Thomas' will: [6]Daughters:
Ruah Lynch
Alice Mar
Mary McBride
Elizabeth Rushing
Anne Stinnet
Esther P. Stennett
Margaret (Daugherty (?)) Sons:
Wilson E. Rushing
Patrick P. Rushing
John C. Rushing
Thomas and Elizabeth also apparently raised an "adopted" son, Andrew Ervin Rushing.[5]
Thomas and family moved to Bedford County, Tennessee before 1820. Thomas and Elizabeth remained there for the rest of their lives.[4][7][8][9]
Death
Thomas signed his will on 24 September 1869. in Bedford County, Tennessee. His will was entered into probate in October 1869. [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
