Birth - Nothing found in the vicinity of St Breward, and parish transcripts give no Salmon christenings other than his own children.
There is a christening of a William Solomon on 29.9.1658 at St Columb Minor, to father Thomas, and one of a William Sammon there on 28.7.1648, to father John. Although this is over 20 miles from where he married, the possibility of a family connection with this parish could well explain why two of his children married there.
However, since he was a clergyman, he may well have come from outside the county. (There is a William Salmon who went to Christ Church Oxford in 1678, but this seems several years too late).
An online transcript of the christenings of three of his children show that he is referred to as Vicar of this Parish.
A parochial history shows him as becoming vicar from 28.9.1677, and being succeeded on 29.6.1691.
Marriage
FAM
14 NOV 1677
Michaelstow, Cornwall
This parish adjoins St Breward.
The marriage appears also in a transcript of St Breward marriages, with annotations indicating Vicar of that parish, and also Rector of Michaelstow (though the latter is after her name -could it refer to her father?).[2]
William was born in 1643.[3] He was the son of John, of "Lawn S. Colomb," Devon, pleb. Exeter Coll., matric. 14 July, 1665, aged 20; B.A. from Balliol Coll. 1669; M.A. from Hart Hall 1672.[4]
He was instituted vicar of St Breward on the 25 September 1677.[5]
He married Mary Hill on the 4 November 1677. Their marriage is recorded in the St Breward parish register.[6]
Guillimus Salmon, hujus Parochiae Vicarius, & Maria Hill, dau. of Christopheri Hill, Michaelstoniensis Rectoris.
Their marriage is also recorded in the Michaelstow parish register.[7]
In 1679 there was a complaint to the Bishop of Exeter about his behaviour. He was accused of "intemperate drinking", calling his parishioners "by several ...approbious names and termes", brawling etc!!! Presumably, the case was dismissed as he was still serving the parish at the time of his death in 1690.[8]
