Biography

June 26, 1773^[1] - Born in Fauquier County, Virginia, to Robert Sanders and Ann Nash.^[2]

March 19, 1790 - Appears in the Fauquier County Tax Rolls in the household of his father, Robert Sanders.^[3]

September 27, 1790 - The will of Robert Sanders was proved in the Court of Fauquier County, Virginia, this day and date. Britton Sanders was named to share in the estate and to receive the second volume of Gill’s New Testament.^[4]

April 16, 1791 - Appears in the Fauquier County tax roll in the household of Ann Sanders.^[5]

May 28, 1792 - Appears in the Fauquier County tax roll in the household of William Sanders.^[6] [William Sanders is his older brother.]

1793 – Britton Sanders is listed as a tithable in the household of John Norris.^[7]

September 23, 1793 - Thomas Sanders is named as the guardian of Britton Sanders, orphan of Robert Sanders in a bond recorded this date.^[8]

April 19, 1794 - Appears in the Fauquier County tax roll as head of his own household.^[9]

4th Monday of April, 1796 – Britton Sanders casts his votes in the election for members of the assembly. He voted for Augustine Jennings and Alexander Scott.^[10]

1798 - Became one of the trustees of the newly formed town of Buckland.^[11]

February 12, 1798 - Britton Sanders marries Mary Love Gill.^[12] Mary Love Gill was born August 20, 1817.^[13]

1799 – Britton Sanders casts a vote in an election.^[14]

March 24, 1803 - Appears in the Fauquier County tax list owing taxes on two horses.^[15]

1804 - Named in the Fauquier County tax rolls owing taxes on one Negro and two horses.^[16]

1812 - Britton Sanders serves as a Captain of the Loudoun County Patrol in the War of 1812.^[17]

October 4, 1813 - Britton Sanders and his wife Mary, and Larkin N. Sanders and his wife Francis sell to William Hunton for the sum of $135.00 nine acres of land being a part of the land allotted to them in the division of the lands of Robert Sanders, deceased. The land begins at a pine & black oak on the summit of a mountain corner to Hunton…to two pines and black oak…to Porters line (originally Peyton’s) …to Huntons…and back to the beginning. (map on original) Deed witnessed by William Chilton, Flett Smith, and Jacob Martin and recorded December 27, 1813.

1813 - On a month and day not named, Thomas Hunton, James Hunton, Owen Thomas, and Eppa Hunton on order of the court, divided the real and personal estate of Robert Sanders. Britton Sanders received Negroes named George and Betty. He was to pay Lewis Sanders six dollars and sixty-six and two thirds cents [most likely to even the distribution]. He was given two tracts of land, numbered 5, on the division map, containing 79¼ acres. Four and one half acres were in the Pond Mountain tract, and 75¾ acres were in the Pignut tract. Map contained in the original deed. This deed was recorded July 25, 1814.^[18]

November 2, 1817 - Mary Love Gill Sanders dies in Fauquier County, Virginia.^[19]

1830 - Britton Sanders is residing in Loudoun County, Virginia in the 1830 Census.^[20]

Britton Sanders marries Ann Eckart. She dies March 15, 1840.^[21]

May 19, 1843 - Britton Sanders dies in Loudoun County, Virginia. Britton Sanders is buried at the New Valley Cemetery, Ironside, near Lucketts off New Valley Church Road. The “stone says "In Loving Memory of Britton Sanders, died May 19, 1843.” The cemetery is adjacent to a private residence that once was a church.^[22]

Britton married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Gill.
