Biography

James Sanders was born about 1769 in North Carolina. He was the son of Captain Jesse Saunders and Jenny Annis Yancey. Some sources list "Yancy Sanders" as his name; some don't have a first name. I think the name "James Yancey Sanders" needs some scrutiny.

James married Elizabeth Salmon on October 31, 1799, in Carteret County, North Carolina.

According to another source, James Yancey Sanders had the following siblings: William Saunders, James Saunders (husband of Levisa Bowen), Sion B. Sanders, John S. Sanders, and Winifred Sanders Moore. According to one source, James and Elizabeth had the following children: Asa Sanders, Jesse "Jish" F. Sanders, Elizabeth Sanders Redman, and John L. Sanders. I have removed Elizabeth Sanders Redman as a child of James Yancey Sanders and Obedience Salmon.

Tax records record James Sanders Sr. just above Nathan Sanders.

The last will and testament of James Sanders is recorded in the Tennessee Probate Court Books and is transcribed as follows: "James Sander's will, proven at Argst, Tenn., 1845. See Minute Book No. 5, p. 413. State of Tennessee, Madison County, July 8, 1845. In the name of God, Amen. I, James Sanders of the State and County of aforesaid, do make and ordain this last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all wills by me at any time made. First, I will and bequeath to my beloved wife, Obedience Sanders, one mare, one cow, all my household and kitchen furniture, and fifteen barrels of corn out of my crop which is now growing, to have and to hold during her natural life and after her decease to be equally divided between my lawful heirs, further, I bequeath to my wife the benefit of the Fifty Acres of occupant land adjoining the land which I live upon, to be rented for her support during her life time. 2C. To my beloved daughter, Elizabeth McAfee, I give and bequeath the balance of my corn crop, my wheat, hogs, and my farming utensils; and after her mother's death, the above named Fifty Acres of land, to her and her heirs forever. 3rd. To my beloved daughter Phebe Jones, I give one bee-stand, (a round grown (sp?). Also to my son-in-law Joseph Jones, I give the use and benefit of the money he owes to me for the space of two years; after expiration of that time, I will that this money, together with what is due me, the demands for which is in the hands of my son Ezekiel Sanders for collection, after paying a noto to Henry Welch for eighty five dollars, be divided among my lawful heirs, allowing to my daughter, Elizabeth McAfee, twenty five dollars less than to each other heir. 4th. To my beloved son Nathan Sanders, I give one pair of steel yards; and to him and my son-in-law Joseph Jones I give and bequeath one wagon for their natural benefit. 5th. To my grandson William J. McAfee, I give my bridle and saddle. 6th. And lastly, I nominate and appoint Samuel P. McDonald, Executor to this my last will and testament, day and date above mentioned. James Sanders, Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of Thos. M. Sanders, James Moore."

Found tax records that list James Sanders Sr. and Nathan Sanders. This would seem to indicate the James and Obedience had a son, James Jr.

Found an Ezekiel Sanders, b. 18 Dec 1799 (sounds right if he is the oldest son - parents married in March 1799), Williamson County, TN; d. 20 Dec 1862; buried in Sowell Cemetery, Marshall County, Tennessee. Married to Mary Stephens around 1821, first child born 1822. Children listed as Loamma A. Sanders; Sarah Ann Collins, Elizabeth Sanders McAdams, Neal Samuel Calvin Sanders. FamilySearch has Ezekiel as a son to this family, along with many other children which may or may not belong.

According to this site, Elizabeth Sanders Redman is the daughter of James Yancey Saunders and (Obedience) Elizabeth Salmon: https://www.geni.com/people/Elizabeth-Redman/6000000041099576637
There are several sites that list Jesse F. "Jish" Sanders as being the son of James Yancey Sanders and Elizabeth Salmon. According to his Find-A-Grave Memorial, Jesse is the son of Samuel and Ellinor Sanders:
Here's a Saunders/Sanders website with some good information:
Source for marriage date for James Sanders and Levisa Bowen, married 19 Mar 1813 in Sumner County, TN; bondsman was William Glover.
I have removed the parents from this profile, because the dates don't match. James' father would have been five years old when he was born. This is an obvious error which I am still researching.
I believe this profile may be attached to the wrong parents. The approximate birth year that was on here when I found it was 1769; the birthdate for his mother is 1781. I removed the birth year in order to save the profile. I have sent a message to the profile manager for the mother, and hopefully we can figure out this issue.
