Biography

Margaret was born in 1842 in Alleghany County, Virginia, to Edwin Sanders and Sarah Leighton[1][2][3][4]

Margaret, daughter of E. L. Sanders and Sally Sanders, married William G. Swanner of Union County, North Carolina, son of Madison and Elizabeth Swaner, on 2 September 1868 at Rockbridge County, Virginia.[3][5]

In 1870, Margaret, William, and three children were living at Walker's Creek, Rockbridge County, Virginia.[6] (Note: It is doubtful that Cloyd/Claud and Georgellen were the children of William Swanner, though they had his last name. Cloyd was born about 1861 when William was still living in North Carolina. Georgeellen might be the child of William and Margaret before they married.)

About 1871, Margaret, William and their children, moved to Baltimore, Maryland. It is likely that during William's passage through Maryland while a Confederate Civil War prisoner he saw the opportunities available that were not available in rural North Carolina or Virginia. Additionally, Margaret's mother, Sarah (Leighton) Sanders and three of Margaret's siblings also moved at the same time to Baltimore.

In 1880, Margaret and William were living with their growing family in Baltimore, Maryland.[7] (Margaret's brothers, Larkin H (Sanders) Saunders and James B (Sanders) Saunders, were listed on the same census sheet as Margaret and William.)

In the 1881 City of Baltimore City Directory are found:

Swanner, Claude M., lab 1 Bethel ct;
Swanner, Mrs. Margaret, grocery, 1 Bethel ct;
Swanner, Wm., lab 1 Bethel ct;[8]

About 1884 - "My g. grandfather, James Alfred, came next in a covered wagon. I understand that when James and Lucy pulled into their yard...Margaret yelled to William to hide because gypsies were in the yard."[9]

In the 1900 census Maggie (age 58) was the wife of William G Swaner in District 14 Election District, Baltimore, Maryland, United States.[10]

Margaret passed away on 7 October 1909 at Baltimore, Maryland[11][4][12].
