Newspaper Obituary dated 5 Dec 1900:
Passed away at San Francisco Hospital Saturday
Walter Sanders, formerly a member of Co. D, 51st Iowa, died in the hospital at San Francisco Saturday.
When Co. D left the Phillippines, Walter remained, enlisting in the 11th Cavalry and becoming a member of Troop L. He has suffered greatly from dysentery, and was sent to San Francisco. On Saturday his family here received a letter from him at San Francisco, and on Monday received by telegraph the sad intelligence that he had died Saturday.
Deceased was well known to almost every one in Knoxville. He had worked in Kinne's grocery for several years, but when the war with Spain broke out he was driving the Adams Express wagon for E.H. Gamble. He departed with the Knoxville company, and bore his part in all the vicissitudes of camp and field until they returned to the United States. He was a good son, a faithful soldier, and one who could always be depended upon to do his share.
The remains will be brought back to Knoxville, arriving probably the last of the week. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.
Burial:
Graceland Cemetery
Knoxville
Marion County
Iowa, USA
Plot: Block 11 Lot 15
