Biography

JOSEPH CORMIER is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 2 Right. Listed with him is his wife, Marguerite Saulnier; their three daughters Susanne, Marie Louise, and Felicite; and his brother Michel Cormier.[1]

Marguerite Saulnier was born 20 May 1732 in Petitcoudiac to Etienne Saulnier and Jeanne Commeau. She was baptized 20 June 1732 at Beaubassin. Her godparents were Jacques Saunie and Magdeleine Commeau.[2] [3][4] [5]

She married Sylvestre Lalande on 24 Sep 1754 in Petitcoudiac.[6]

In 1755 Sylvestre and Marguerite were residing in Memramcook. No children were recorded yet on the census that year. [3] Around 1756-1757, it is uncertain but likely that they sought refuge at Camp d'Espérance on the Miramichi. [7]

She married second to Joseph Pierre Cormier, son of Pierre dit Palette Cormier and Cécile Thibodeau of Chignecto, around 1759 in Acadie. [8]

She was on a list of Acadian released prisoners at Halifax in August 1763, unnamed, with her husband and three children.[8][9] Joseph and Marguerite immigrated to Louisiana in 1765. Arrived in Louisiana in 1765 Marguerite Saulnier of Petitcoudiac, age unrecorded, with husband Joseph Cormier of Chignecto, age 25, a year-old daughter and Joseph's younger brother Michel. Marguerite was pregnant when she reached New Orleans and gave birth to twin daughters probably at Opelousas. They settled on Prairie Bellevue. [citation needed] Note that this paragraph differs from the information about children provided on the wall of names.

In Opelousas census, 1766, unnamed, she probably was the woman in the household of Joseph CORMIER. [citation needed]

She died before 25 April 1771, when her husband married Anne Michel.

DNA lineage

Note from Karen Theriot Reader:
" I asked Stephen A. White to help solve a DNA mystery, and he was able to confirm a new lineage for the Marguerite SAULNIER who married Joseph Pierre." CORMIER (32 in the DGFA).

E-mail correspondence 14 Mar 2022 "RE: mtDNA puzzle," From Stephen A. White, Genealogist, Centre d'études acadiennes Anselme-Chiasson, Université de Moncton. - The test result you mention (X2b7) does indeed indicate that the lineage must go back to Barbe Bajolet... The key to the solution is in identifying Joseph Cormier's first wife as the widow of Sylvestre Lalande. This Marguerite Saulnier was a daughter of Étienne Saulnier and Jeanne Comeau. The maternal line than passes through Abraham Comeau and his wife Marguerite Pitre. The latter was one of Barbe Bajolet's daughter Marie Pesseley's younger daughters.
The mtDNA test results had a Haplogroup of X2b7, which pointed to descent from Marie Barbe BAJOLET. So now the correct line should be:
Marie Barbe BAJOLET, married 1st Isaac PESSELEY;
Marie PESSELEY, married 1st Jean (dit Beneque) PITRE (1);
Marguerite PITRE, married Abraham COMEAU (8);
Jeanne COMEAU, married Etienne SAULNIER (6);
Marguerite SAULNIER, married 1st Sylvestre LALANDE, 2nd Joseph Pierre CORMIER (32);
Felicite CORMIER, married Joseph BABINEAU;
Anastasie Thersile BABINEAU, married Augustin BENOIT;
Salome Azelima BENOIT, married Hippolyte Nicolas ARSENEAU;
Eve Helene ARSENEAU, married Andre BABINEAUX;
Andrea BABINEAUX, married Joseph Mentor DUPLECHIN.
