Thomas Saunders, who came here from Amesbury in the State of Massachusetts, settled upon the lot of land lying westerly of, and adjoining, that of Mr. John Pressey, Jr. His wife was Miss Hephzibah Chase, of Salisbury, Massachusetts, and they were married in Hampton, New Hampshire, in 1755; in 1757 they moved to Amesbury, and came here in 1771. His wife and that of Mr. John Pressey [see Pressey, John d. 1799, Deer Isle, Maine, wife Mercy Chase] were sisters. Mr. Saunders was drowned near the mouth of the Northwest Harbor in June, 1786, while engaged in towing some logs which were to be manufactured into pumps for the purpose of pumping salt water for the manufacture of salt. He left two sons, Messrs. James and Timothy Saunders, and two daughters, one the wife of Mr. John Dow ; another, that of Mr. Thomas Small, Jr. His farm passed into the hands of his sons, who occupied it till they died.
