Biography

Isaac Scarborough served in the War of 1812

Isaac was born in 1780 to James Scarborough and Grace King, his father's first of four wives. Grace died when Isaac was 5. From following census records, it seems Isaac married twice, though his first wife's name is unknown. He married Nancy Barnes, a widow with eight children, in 1848, and had two children with her when he was 69 and 73. He died in 1857 at 77 years old, and his will is shown in the photos.

Isaac Scarborough's Will

I Isaac Scarborough of the County of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

First - That my executor (herein after named) shall provide for my body and decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts however and to whomever owing out of the moneys(?) that may first come into his hands as a part or parcel of my estate.

Item - I give and devise to my beloved wife Nancy Scarborough the tract of land whereon I now live which I purchased of Joab Horns, also the tract of land adjoining it which I purchased of Louis Dildon, to have and to hold to her the said Nancy Scarborough for and during the term of her natural life or widowhood in satisfaction for and in lieu of her dower and thirds(?) of and in all my real estate.

Item - I give and bequeath to my said beloved wife Nancy Scarborough the following slaves (viz) Mary, Edith, Harriet, John, Himbrick, Abraham, and Gray Hilliard and the increase of said negroes to have and to hold forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Queen Victoria all that tract of land lying on Whiteoak Swamp known as the Shalington(?) Tract to have and to hold to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my youngest daughter Isaac Susan Scarborough all this tract of land whereon I now live including the Dilda(?) Tract which lies adjoining except the life estate or widowhood estate of my wife devised in a former item of this my will to have and to hold to her and her heirs in fee simple forever.

Item - I loan to my beloved wife Nancy Scarborough during her life or widowhood the following slaves (viz) Harry, Orrin, Rose, and Aurin and after her death or the expiration of her widowhood it is my will that these last named negroes and increase shall go to my two daughters Queen Victoria and Isaac Susan equally.

Item - I give and bequeath to my to daughters Queen Victoria Scarborough and Isaac Susan Scarborough all the balance of my negros which I now have or may have at the expiration of my … which has not heretofore been disposed of to be their right and property forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my two daughters Queen Victoria and Isaac Susan each one bed, bedstead and cover now standing upstairs in the hall room to them and their heirs forever.

Item - I loan to my beloved wife Nancy Scarborough during her life all my household and kitchen furniture of every description not otherwise disposed of, my two brandy stilles, one apple mill and all the cider casks and, after her death, to go to my aforesaid two daughters to be their right and property forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Nancy Scarborough all of my stock of every description (viz) horses, hogs, cattle and sheep, also all the poultry, also all of the provisions of every kind that may be on hand at my death, and the crop if any should be on hand is to be my wife's, also all of my working tools of every description including carts and waggons to be hers absolutely forever.

Item - I give and bequeath to my oldest daughter Queen Vicgoria Scarborough One Thousand dollars to make her portion equal with my youngest daughter's.

Item - If after paying all of my just debts and the before mentioned legacy, there shall be anything remaining in the hands of executor, my and will and desire is that it shall go to my two daughters Queen Victoria Scarborough and Isaac Susan Scarborough equally to be theirs absolutely.

And lastly - I do hereby constitute and appoint my trusty friend Cofield Ellis my lawful executor to all intents and purposes to execute this my last will and testament according to the true intent and meaning of the same, and every part and clause thereof, hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.

In witness whereof I the said Isaac Scarborough do hereunto set my hand and seal this the 1st day of October AD 1853.

The foregoing paper … purporting to be the last will and testament of Isaac Scarborough, dec., is propounded for probate in open court and the due execution thereof by the said Isaac Scarborough is proven by the oath and examination of Wm Ellis and Benjamin Bynum, the subscribing witnesses thereto, and the Executor therein named being deceased, on motion it is ordered that Letters of Administration over testaments annexed be granted to James Barney on his entering into Bond in the sum of sixty thousand dollars with Jonathan Ellis, Benjamin Bynum, Wm. C Ellis and William Barnes, as his Sureties (Bond Filed) and administration duly qualifying by taking the prescribed oath.
