Biography

Ellen was born during a snowstorm in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania on Wednesday. January 28, 1953. Her parents were Paul Calvin Schauer (Saturday, October 24, 1931 - Wednesday, April 2, 2003) and Helen Lucille "Cille" Wright Schauer Riddles (Thursday, July 27, 1933 - living in 2017 in Independence, Kansas). Her father was a milkman in southern California.

Ellen's middle name was changed from Louise to May when her sister April was born. Her parents moved to California when she was two years old.

Following Ellen's 3rd divorce in 1998 she legally changed her name back to Ellen May Schauer.

Ellen quit school in 11th grade to begin her family, she got a GED nineteen years later and went on to build a successful career as an Information Systems Analyst, without a college degree. She coded in VAX/VMS & Bliss script in the early years, and managed the City of San Diego Web Team for the last 15 years until her planned retirement from the City in 2014, the last two years of which she began a second career as a Fine Artist specializing in oil portraits. Ellen bought her first home on her own in 1994 at 88 Georgina Street in Chula Vista, CA. Clearly noted on the Deed of Trust under Buyer: Mr. _____,  was: "Ellen Schauer, a Single Woman" and under Wife: Mrs.______, was: "N/A".  Being active in athletics in middle age and having reached the summit of Mt. Whitney in a day two different times in 2000 and 2003, Ellen sponsored a fundraiser two months before her Great Grandson was born to raise money for niece Megan Butler's needed foot surgery back in Ohio. The promised event was for this "Granny" to walk one mile for every $100 donated, non-stop. On March 5-6, 2011, at age 58, Ellen walked 90 miles non-stop, through the night, from Mission Bay to Oceanside Harbor & back plus 20 miles around Mission Bay, helping to raise $8,600. She monitored the donations thru a Paypal app and received hundreds of messages of encouragement while posting her progress on Facebook with her iPhone. All the while she maintained an average 3.6 MPH for those first 90 miles, with Megan pushing her in her wheelchair at the finish line. Ellen then got up the next day and finished the last 10 miles toward her personal goal  of www.100miles4megan.com. The fundraiser ended with $10,060 in donations and Megan had successful foot surgery seven months later.  Still routinely active in weight training, volleyball, rollerblading, bicycling, hiking, and paddle boarding after her 60th birthday, Ellen will attest to the importance of staying active and fit with one of her favorite sayings, "Use it or lose it!!"
