Daughter of August Carl Schilling and Ottilie Wilhelmine Koerth.
Bertha was born in 1883 in Maple Grove Township, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She was the fifth of nine children.
She strongly believed in education for herself and her children.
In 1935 her husband Ed sold the farm in Outagamie County and the family moved to Oregon. They lived near Canby in Clackamas County.
In 1958 they moved from Canby to McMinnville, Oregon.
She passed away in 1984 at the age of 101. Her body was donated to science; the remains were cremated and the ashes scattered in the rose garden of the University of Oregon Medical Center in Portland.
