August Schumann verfasste Romane und hatte überregional einen guten Ruf als Übersetzer englischsprachiger Autoren. Von 1807 an führte er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder die Verlagsbuchhandlung Gebrüder Schumann in Zwickau, die für die Förderung allgemeiner Bildung durch Herausgabe von Klassikern aller Nationen im Taschenbuchformat bekannt war.
