Johann Schusterschitz was born on 28 March 1864 in Reuter #12, Gottschee, Krain, Austria (present-day Laze, Novo Mesto, Slovenia), the third of nine children of Johann Schusterschitz and Maria Klobutscher. He was baptized on the same day.
He married widow Agnes Grill (née Juran) on 26 October 1891 in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama. Together they had at least ten children. They migrated back to Reuter, and Johann spent time in Blocton, Bibb, Alabama as a coal miner, where he was a witness at the wedding of his brother Mathias. Sometime thereafter, he permanently reunited with his family in their home country.
In the early-1940s, Johann was forcibly relocated from his home in Reuter to Trebež in the Rann Triangle, where he passed away on 4 October 1945.
