Joseph Scofield

The backstory on Joseph, Samuel, and Eunice:

Eunice Buxton was the daughter of Clement Buxton III and Judith Prince of Stamford, Connecticut. Eunice Buxton first wed Samuel Scofield and was widowed. She then married Joseph Scofield, who was a cousin of Samuel. Samuel and Eunice had son also named Samuel (b. Dec. 12, 1705, and d. Dec. 2, 1706). Samuel the father died "early", Jan. 27, 1707. Subsequently, Eunice married Joseph in 1709. Samuel, the son of Joseph and Eunice was born in 1716.
"Samuel and Unica ("Youne" Eunice) Buxton, m. Feb. 10, 1703-4"
"Joseph and Eunice Scofield, m. Aug. 11, 1709: Samuel, b. Dec. 26, 1716." [1]

Will, Death & Probate Papers

Joseph’s will is dated Dec 12, 1726. The first sentence states “I Joseph Scofield of Stamford in the Colony of Connecticut being weak in body but of sound mind…”. The will mentions his: “Loveing wife Eunice Scofield… Eldest son Joseph Scofield… daughters… youngest son Samuel Scofield… brother in Law Liut Sam[u]el Weed…” The probate court’s record indicates that Joseph used a mark and seal to execute his will. The mark in the court’s record looks like a large C with the bottom part extended to the right roughly doubling its width.[2][3]
Regarding the date of his death, an inventory was included in the probate papers on March 7, 1726/7. The heading to the inventory reads “An inventory of ye Estate of Joseph Scofield Late of Stamford who deceast ye 13th day of September 1726”. This month of September is clearly a transcription error in the records as Joseph dated his will December 12, 1726. So, I would presume that Joseph died December 13, 1726, a day after he signed his will.[2][4]
In regards to the inventory of his estate. It contained 56 lines, with many lines listing two or more items. Here is a sampling of some of the items in the inventory and the appraised value (in pounds, schillings and pence):
  • one third part of a pair of oxen (4 , - , - )
  • five cows (22 , 10 , - )
  • a feather bed and furniture with an under bed (9 , - , - )
  • a brass kettle (3, 10) ye one half ye yolk iron ( - , 1 , 6 ) (3 , 11 , 6 )
  • ye house & barn and homelot (80 , - , - )
  • land at ye head of ye north field (75 , - , - )
  • wheat upon ye ground (4 ) an old syckle ( - , - , 6 ) an old saddle ( - , 4 ) ( 4 , 4 , 6 )
The inventory was attested to, under oath, by: Samuel Weed (brother-in-law), Samuel Hait (likely his eldest son Joseph’s future father-in-law) and Samuel Scofield (brother).[2][5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
