Delilah Scott Lake, Mother of James Scott Lake, was born in Knox County, Indiana, Feb. 22, 1835. She and her Father's family came to Linn County, Iowa in 1838.[1] She grew to womanhood there and married Florentine Lake April 10th, 1856.[2] They farmed there four years and then came by ox team to Ellis Township, Hardin County, Iowa in 1860 in Spring time, bringing their three children with them. They were Joe, Mary and Harrison.[3] Subject was of the opinion that one of her Grandmothers was Pennsylvania Dutch. Her cousins, Reson and Milton Kennedy, preceded her to the community in Ellis Township. She could faintly remember her mother riding on horseback beside the wagons on their way from Indiana to Iowa, being the only thing she could remember about that trip. She and her husband were charter members of the Hardin County Fair Association, and of the Cottage Cemetery Association and attended all of the cemetery sociables when possible. They accumulated many acres of land in Hardin County, Iowa and in North Dakota and retired to a new house on their 40 acres near their son, James' place,[4] where they lived until the husband died in 1906 of Brights Disease. After this, she made her home with her son, James, and family.[5][6] She lived to be 93 years old and always enjoyed visiting with friends. She enjoyed making quilts, bedspreads, knitting, embroidering, etc. and was able to work at them until two years before she died, when her eyesight was very poor. She read a great deal. In her middle age life she was round and stout, weighed 185 lbs. She was a cheerful, medium height woman with sparkling brown eyes and dark wavy hair that did not turn gray till she was past seventy years old. In her old age she got quite thin. She was generous, honest and kind. Was glad to meet a neighbor and was much interested in the community life and each one's doings. She was a contributor to the Red Cross, Church, Charity, etc. She enjoyed playing cards. She played solitary after she could not see to read or sew. Some of her favorite eats were fried chicken and all meats. Dumplings, noodles, mush, potato soup, pancakes and fresh bread. She died of cancer and old age after being sick two years. She was at rest after Aug 11th, 1928 and was buried in Cottage Cemetery. There is a tombstone at her grave.[7] She was a lover of flowers. She had a country school education. Ten children were born:
Joseph Henry Lake
Mary Francis Lake Winterfield
Harrison Stuckslager Lake
Nancy Epheline Lake Miller
John Walter Lake
James Scott Lake
William Thomas Lake
Cornelius Brown Lake
Charles Augustus Lake
Nellie Estella Lake Winterfield
Note: Delilah's birth place.
Delilah's parents were married in Montgomery county, Indiana, according to their marriage record. According to FamilySearch current data, six of their children, including Delilah, are stated to have been born there, too. Hence, it is perplexing that Aunt June Neuenfeldt would state in her journal that Delilah was born in Knox county, and that is exactly how it was transcribed. As it stands now, Montgomery, seems correct, at least on the surface, but it would be prudent to dig a little deeper.
