Biography

James Scrymgeour is a member of Clan Scrymgeour.

James was born about 1455 son to James Scrymgeour Constable of Dundee and his first wife.

On the death of his father at the end of 1478, he became Constable of Dundee. A Precept of Clare Constat was thus made by Sir Thomas Maule of Panmure in favour of James son and heir of the deceased James S. constable of Dundee in the lands of Benvie etc. 28 Feb. 1478.[1]

A Precept of Chancery for giving sasine to Archibald McEwan of Pennymore attorney of James Scrymgeour, constable of Dundee, of 66 merks worth of the lordship of Glassary was notified on 22 Jul 1479 to Colin Campbell, earl of Argyll.[2]

An Instrument of Resignation was made by John Robertson of land lying in Argyllsgate, Dundee in favour of James Scrymgeour constable of Dundee and his wife Janet Lyon on 17 February 1482/83.[3] This raises doubts as an earlier record suggest that Janet Lyon was the name of his father's wife in 1468. Inventory of Scrymgeour Family papers No.61[4]It is feasible that this James also married a Janet Lyon or perhaps the date is wrong, perhaps 1472. It appears that James Scrymgeour did not marry Isabel Gray until about 1490 when he would have been aged about 35. This may well be his secnd marriage in which case a Janet Lyon could have been his first wife.

James Scrymgeour had issue:

  • James hie heir
  • Elizabeth mar. Sir Thomas Erskine of Brechin
  • Giles mar. Thomas Spalding and had daughters Janet and Jane Spalding
  • Margaret mar. John Stewart earl of Buchan
  • Janet mar. James Lord Carlyle
