John Searcy was born in 1798 in the Cove Road area on the north side of Main Broad River in Rutherford County, N.C. His first wife was Sarah "Sally" Ledbetter whom he wed in Rutherford County on Oct. 17, 1825, daughter of wealthy planter John Ledbetter. They received land on Cove Creek and on both sides of Cove Road when her late father's estate was finally settled in 1828. The area is near present Lake Lure, N.C. According to Rutherford County, N.C. Deed Book 47 the tract "..known as a part of the John Searcy lot on the east side of Cove Creek in the plantation of John Ledbetter dest., below forks of Cove Creek and Cedar Creeks." Sarah died unexpectedly about 1831. On Nov. 17, 1832 he married Sarah Harris. John's father, William Searcy died about 1836 or 1837. The Civil War pension application of John's son, Overton Ledbetter Searcy, indicates that John Searcy went to Gilmer County, GA. about 1837 but brought his family there a few years later. In 1881 John Searcy sold land to the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad. Elder John Searcy died in 1883 and is believed to be buried in Rock Creek Baptist Cemetery in the hamlet of Cherry Log.
