Biography

Edward Seymour was born about 1585.[1]

Edward was the oldest son and heir of Sir Edward Seymour, first Baronet, and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Arthur Champernowne, of Dartington Hall, Devon.[1]

Edward was the brother of:[1]

  1. John Seymour who married a sister of Sir Richard Slanning;
  2. William Seymour, died unmarried;
  3. Walter Seymour, died unmarried;
  4. Richard Seymour, married a daughter of — Ashley;
  5. Bridget Seymour, who married John Bruen, Esq, of Admerston, Wiltshire;
  6. Mary Seymour, married Sir George Farewell, knight of Hill Bishop, Somerset;
  7. Elizabeth Seymour, who married George Cary, Esq, of Cockington, Devon;
  8. Amy Seymour, who married Edmund Parker, Esq, of Borrington, Devon;

Edward married Dorothy, the daughter of Sir Henry Killigrew, knight, of Laroch (or Lathbury), Cornwall,[1] and his first wife, Catherine, the daughter of Sir Anthony Cooke of Gidea Hall, Essex, on 15 December 1600.[2]

Edward and Dorothy had children:[1]

  2. Henry Seymour;
  3. Sir Joseph Seymour, who married Bridget, the daughter of — Anderson;
  4. Thomas Seymour, made Clerk of the Hanaper for life in 1667, married Anne, the daughter of Sir Richard Anderson, knight, of Penley, Herts;
  5. Robert Seymour, died young;
  6. John Seymour, died young;
  7. Elizabeth Seymour, who married 1) Sir William Courtenay, of Powderham Castle, Devon, and 2) Sir Amos Meridith, bart, of Timberley Hall, Cheshire;
  8. Mary Seymour, married Sir Jonathan Trelawney, bart, parents of Sir J Trelawney, bar, Bishop of Winchester;
  9. Margaret Seymour, who married Francis Trelawney, brother of her sister Mary's husband;
  10. Anne Seymour, married Dr Stourton;
  11. Catherine Seymour, who married Sir Thomas Hall of Bradford, Wiltshire;

Edward was knighted when he was aged 18, by King James I of England at Greenwich, on his accession to the throne of England on 22 May 1603.[1]

He succeeded his father in April 1613, and was appointed Governor of Dartmouth that December, and Deputy Lieutenant of county Devon by Lord Bath on 5 March 1617, and command of a South Devon regiment in February 1620.[1] He was one of the Knights of the Shire for Devon in 1621.[2]

Sir Edward Seymour, second Baronet of Berry Pomeroy, died on 5 October 1659, at Berry Pomeroy where he was buried.[1]
