Biography

Richard Shakespeare was born in about 1510 in Warwickshire, England.

He was the paternal grandfather of the playwright, William Shakespeare – Richard's son John was the father of William.[1]

Many Shakespeare researchers state that the identity of Richard's wife is unknown. It is possible that he married an Abigail Webb in about 1532. (See Abigail (Webb) Shakespeare (abt.1515-abt.1595).) However, there are no records to confirm this.

His children were Henry Shakespeare, Anna Shakespeare, John Shakespeare, Thomas Shakespeare and Matthew Shakespeare.

Richard Shakespeare was a tenant farmer of Robert Arden of Wilmecote. He was in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1551 to set up business trading in animals, wool, malt and corn. He produced the goods and John sold them (Not sure which John.

Richard passed away in about 1561 at Stratford, Warwickshire, England.

While some sources suggest descent from John Shakespeare (abt. 1460 - 1521) and Joan Unknown (b. abt 1460), there is no conclusive evidence for this.

Was Richard Shakespeare born "about 1490" as stated in the profile, or "about 1512" as stated in the Biography?

According to respected Shakespeare researchers, the identity of Richard's wife is unknown. There is lots of speculative/bad genealogy around Shakespeare's family.

Shakespear-17 and Shakespeare-137 appear to represent the same person because: Hi, I've noticed what I think are duplicate files. Because of the different spellings of the last name, they don't come out together in a search, which may have led to a duplication. I'd appreciate your having a look and merging if appropriate, thanks! Note: in this case, I'm proposing that Shakespear be merged to Shakespeare, which means a change in the LNAB of the former.

Shakespeare was not spelled correctly and needs to be merged with Webb-1559 as does the son, Matthew, listed below.
