Franklin was born 1856, son of Moses and Susannah Shantz. He was married to Leah Groff. They had six children and one adopted child. He was listed in the 1901 census as a Mennonite in Religion, and a Farmer by Occupation. His obituary from The Gospel Herald - Volume xxi, Number 42, January 17, 1929. "Franklin Shantz, son of Moses & Susannah Shantz, was born Sept. 14, 1856, died in his home in Waterloo, Ontario, January 1, 1929. He was married to Leah Groff, who predeceased him nearly five years ago. He united with the Mennonite Church at an early age in which faith he died. He was of a quiet disposition, but we believe his walk and conduct spoke louder than his words. He expressed himself as being ready to meet his Lord & Savior and had a desire to depart. He leaves three sons, three daughters, one adopted daughter, twenty-six grand children, four brothers, four sisters besides a host of relatives & friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bros. Noah Hunsberger and at Waterloo Mennonite Church by Jesse Martin & Jonas Snider."
