Biography

Joseph C Shattuck was born in 1835 in Marlborough, New Hampshire. He was son of Abraham and Jerusha (his second wife). [1]

He married Hattie M. Knight, daughter of Josiah H and Martha (Mason) Knight, on August 17, 1858. [2]

Mr. Shattuck moved to Colorado in 18170 with the "Union Colony" an organization which originated with N. C. Meeker, Agricultural Editor of the New York Tribune and which founded the temperance town of Greeley. "This was the first attempt of Eastern people to settle on the Western land in a body and resulted in the most extensive and thoroughly organized system of farming by irrigation in this country." [2]

Mr. Shattuck represented his coutry in the Territorial Legislature in 1874. He was principal of the first graded school in Greely and for several years vice-president and business manager of the colony, resigning in Nov 1876 and was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction of the "Centennnial State" at the first State election on October 3, 1876. [2]
