Biography

The Shattuck husband of Great Migration-era migrant Damaris Shattuck was born about 1600.[citation needed] Various "sources" say that his name was Samuel and others say it was William. As his origins and given name are unknown, he is shown without parents or first name.

"Nothing was found by Lemuel Shattuck to show a proved connection between the main family of his Memorials and the Salem family, nor was he able to state the name of the male progenitor of the Salem family, and it is probable that he never came to America and that his widow Damaris crossed the Atlantic with her children. The name Shattuck has been found in the marriage register of the church at Dorchester, Dorset, and the Pope family probably also came from that county."[citation needed]

Samuel the original immigrant to Massachusetts, thought by some to refer to himself in his will as Samuel Shattocke Son, suggesting the "unknown" father of Samuel Shattock was also named Samuel is incorrect. Samuel the immigrant's will has been misread.

Samuel Shattuck Senr not Son

Compare the word in the opening sentence with the same word used later in the will where it is clearly Samuel Gardner Senr and Junr.

The following is a tentative list, order unknown, of the children of Damaris the elder:"[1]

  • Samuel, feltmaker or hatter, joined First Church, Salem, 16 May 1642; d at Salem 6 Jun 1689
  • Damaris, m. at Boston 30 Sept. 1653, Isaac Page
  • Mary, m. ___ Hams (?)
  •  ?Hannah, perhaps, first wife of George Gardner
  • Sarah, m. ca. 1652, Richard Gardner, d. at Nantucket, 1724, age 92
  •  ?Gertrude, perhaps, m. Joseph Pope before 1642; living 1666
  •  ?William, shoemaker, of Boston 1650-8

References to a death in 1698 at age 69 or 103 are for his son Samuel the Feltmaker. His wife Damaris (Unknown) Shattuck was a widow in 1641.

Research Notes

Shattuck-1265 was disconnected as his father as no source was added proving the connection

Says that there is evidence that the two Shattockes emigrated to the Massachusetts colony sometime between 1620 and 1650. (In Charles Edward Banks, Topographical dictionary of 2885 English emigrants to New England, 1620-1650.) The most dates are between 1634 and 1641 when Damaris Shattuck was admitted to the church in Salem. We do not know if Banks successfully found all Shattocke immigrants. William Shattock and Samuel Shattock were from a town in Somerset. See  Massachusetts Shattucks for a complete exploration of this early history.

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for the comment and links. I'll replace the TAG link in the bio with the one you provided (as yours doesn't require a subscription).

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to view the ancestry links without a subscription (they won't work with the library edition I use). Can you provide a sharing link? You can either use the WikiTree Sourcer app, or without the app following these instructions: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/792811/creating-a-free-to-view-image-link-from-ancestry-com

I have added the sharing links for Ancestry.

Unfortunately, the linked material offers the identification of the senior Samuel _without source_: each of the Ancestry entries constitutes someone's interpretation or transcription of some other, unspecified material.

A wide-ranging, two-generation search of online-accessible variations of the name Shattuck/Shattock[e] – via FamilySearch, Ancestry, NEHGS, and FreeReg UK – yields no entries among the currently-transcribed baptismal records from 1560-1620 in Dorset, from which it has long been believed this family emerged. There are however quite a number of records to be found in neighboring _Somerset_, showing Shattock[e] families – the largest number in Taunton, to its northwest at Stogumber, or to its northeast at North Petherton.

None of the entries in this time period, however, is for a Samuel (nor is there one for any Daniel, another given name that has been proposed for the Shattock paterfamilias). A "Damarius" is shown as the wife of a Thomas Shattock at Wells, Somerset, where she is listed as the mother of a daughter Mary in 1636 (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6D9K-7MR5); however, she is likely the Damaris Shattock buried at Wells in 1638 (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6D93-W4M7). There are a few Somerset Shattock marriage records for Williams – "William" being noted above as yet another proposed given name for the Shattuck progenitor – in the appropriate time period, but none of the brides are named Damaris, or anything close to it.

If any primary record exists that justifies the identification of the father of Samuel Shattuck of Salem as a senior Samuel, it has evidently not yet been transcribed and made available via the 'net. All known references to the paterfamilias as "Samuel" appear to be secondary or tertiary, and must be classified as speculative.

The general gist is that Samuel-1 and William-1 were 2 brothers who came over very early. Samuel’s wife was Damaris Sibley. Samuel-1 had a son William, and William-1 also had a son, William Jr. At one point Damaris had custody of both boys, both under 16 years old.

Almost the entire family was Quaker, and they suffered for their beliefs.

Supposedly Samuel-1 died abt 1639. Damaris did not marry Gardner until after 1659, when his first wife died. 20 years was a long time to be a widow with a horde of kids in the wilds of Colonial America.

I am looking for the primary sources, but I can’t post them until tomorrow afternoon. The Shattucks are part of the weekly challenge.

Have you found a reliable source for Damaris being a Shipley? Not asking you to post it now, but I am curious.

Sibley, not Shipley. Dau of Henry. I have her baptism and marriage records. Baptism 1595.

I haven't read through all of this, but it does look like these possibilities may have already been considered. Please see: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/246835/proposal-remove-first-name-samuel-shattuck-husband-damaris

At present his children are shown as being born (variously) in Wiltshire, England as well as Salem and Nantucket, Massachusetts. Likely they should all have a blank birth location field...
Hi Darlene!

Thank you for bringing that up. I'd say those relationships need to be checked. I've added a category so it will be added to our to-do list.

Thanks!

Done, all set to England uncertain (except Samuel born c. 1616 per his deposition was certainly not from Massachusetts). I also severed son John, no record of him, possibly conflated with John Shattuck-40

Can Samuel be added as his first name?
posted by Amy Hamilton
Hi Amy,

His given name is not known for sure, as it says in the first paragraph. We'd add it only if it was proven.

Shattuck-1264 and Shattuck-58 appear to represent the same person because: These are either duplicates or Samuel should be detached from Damaris. Her first husband's first name is unknown.
Yes, the merge should be to Unknown Shattuck and the parents attached to 1264 need to go away as they are absent any documentation.

Thank you for the comment. Merge now completed.

Seeing that there's been a history of adding unsupportable details to this man's biography, i think its appropriate to continue protecting the profile as a PGM adjunct.
posted by Ellen Smith
Is there continued need for the adjunct protection, though, given that he's been erroneously associated with the Salem Shattucks?

Removing PGM project PPP is OK with me.

I think that Unknown Shattuck, his wife Damaris and son Samuel (d. 1689) and lany other children labeled PGM can have the project removed. The widow Damaris was here in 1641, but there is no earlier record proving her a Puritan Migration migrant for her or her family.

I've made himPGM "adjunct" until we figure out if he came over or not. I also updated the URL and moved it into a citation.

I did some cleanup but there is still, under "Notes" data that needs moving to their pertinent profiles.

posted by Jillaine Smith
Is there proof that the Unknown husband of Damaris arrived and so is PGM? It doesn't seem that Banks' Topographical Dictionary actually shows who the husband is.

The link cited at the start of the Second (?) Biography is no longer active. That biography needs to be broken up to be readable and have verifiable sources within turned into inline citations. There also appears to be an entire section on subsequent generations that should be placed in the appropriate profiles.

Hi Vic,

In reference to profile Sibley-70, it has Damaris as daughter of Henry Sibley.

His name sounded familiar to me, so I dug out some of my old notes. They showed that I concluded long ago that Damaris Sibley (who married our Samuel or William Shattuck) could very well be a Damaris Sibley (bp. 22 February 1595, St. Pauls, Walden, Hertfordshire, England), apparently a daughter of Henry Sibley (bp. 19 January 1559/60, Cheveley, Cambridgeshire). I'm not sure if researchers have considered this possibility or not.

posted by Kenneth Kinman
William is not the father of Samuel. Some people think Samuel's name was really William. Perhaps the two profiles should be merged. If not, William should be removed as father of Samuel.
posted by Kenneth Kinman
William Shattuck couldn't have been Samuel's father, as his birthdate precludes that possibility.
posted on Shattuck-68 (merged) by Brie (Howell) Ogg
It shows his father was 11 years old when Samuel was born. Probably not the right names/dates.

The husband of Damaris does not have a known first name. He died before 1641 when she (widow) showed up in Salem out of nowhere and joined the church.

Didn't marry in 1619 in Boston.

The death date of 6 Jun 1698 is a typo for the death date of Damaris's son, Samuel Shattuck shown 6 Jun 1689. headstone: http://tinyurl.com/SamuellShattockStone1620-1689

In 1678 Samuel Shattuck was Administrator of Estate of Edward Wharton and stated that he was about 58 years old (backing up the death age of 69 in 1689). He's the one who went to see the King. He is not the witch trial accuser. That was his son.

See what we know about Samuel (1620-1689) and Damaris UNK starting page 361: http://tinyurl.com/ShattuckBook
