In 1862, at age 18, Pleasant hilliard was drafted into Company H, Third South Carolina Regiment, Kershaw's Brigade, and served the remainder of the Civil War.He was not in sympathy with the war and did not volunteer. He built a log house on the 40 acre farm his father gave him.
