Biography

Lebanon, Pennsylvania

My Side of the Story

My father was in uniform and stationed in Hawaii. My mother was in shorts and was in her home town of Hilo, Hawaii. The rest is history.
I was born in Hilo, Hawaii during WWII and affectionately termed a "Black Out Baby." Black out curtains were mandated in Hawaii during the war since the islands lived in fear of another attack. Nothing else to do after dark, I presume, and here I am! Besides Hilo, I lived in Paauhau, where my father was the owner/manager of a Sugar Plantation Store and then in Kailua on the island of Oahu where he worked at the Department of Education. In 1951 we left Paradise and moved to Guam (32 miles long, 8 miles wide) for 5 years where he was in charge of a project to remove the downed aircraft on the island, smelt them down and return them to whence they came.
In 1956, deciding their children needed a good "stateside education," my parents decided to leave Guam and head east, to the land of Milk and Honey ~ California. But first a trip with the entire family thru the Philippines, Hong Kong, Formosa aka Taiwan, Japan and back to Hawaii for a visit with my mother's family.
This article was found just recently in my Grandmother's Bible. Evidently my father had sent it to her while we were visiting my Grandparent's in Hilo, Hawaii on our way to our new home in California.
Trip "Home" from Guam
I saw the continental United States at the age of 14 for the first time and what a culture shock! We settled in Riverside, California where I graduated from school, went to college, married, raised two children, divorced, remarried and eventually settled in Tehachapi, California.
Upon my father's death, I was presented a box of Bibles, papers, books, pictures and everything having to do with his family. My mother's comment was I was probably the only person interested in this "Junk" so I might as well have it! Boy was she right! My addiction was started in 1990 and been going strong ever since! So strong I started volunteering at the Historical Society and worked there until a second retirement seemed more appealing that arising at 6AM.
Genealogy brought us to Pennsylvania, the land of my father's ancestors and retirement was the deciding factor to try something new ~ hence the move to Lancaster, Pennsylvania! At one point we unknowingly bought a home that my father's 3rd cousin had once owned!
I have two children, one daughter-in-love, three grandchildren and one grandson-in-law.
NEWS FLASH!!' WE ARE NOW GREAT-GRANDPARENTS!!
On 24 February 2015 in Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina, Philip Lee made his entrance into this world! His father, Michael and I am just delighted that my daughter, who never ages, is now a grandmother!
Life is good ~

Something I learned in 2nd Grade and have been sharing ever since:

I was named the best possible combination of names. Had I named myself, I would have selected the same two names my parents picked.
Although they would tell you I was named Dorothea after my great grandmother Lindgren (Catherina Dorothea Elisabeth Schultz Lindgren) and my mother (Catherine Dorothea Lindgren Sherman) and Linda after her grandfather Lindgren who was called "Lindy". Nothing could be further than the truth!
The truth is, when they first saw their first daughter, both of them in unison, said "God has given us such a Beautiful Gift!" and decided to name me Dorothea (God's Gift) and Linda (Beautiful)!

Sources

Documentation includes: birth certificate, marriage license, social security records, diploma, newspaper articles, photographs, employment documents and a fading memory.

Because of Them, I Am:

Maternal Line:
Carlsson; Doesing; Estenberg; Franz; Gode/Goda; Grantin; Jonsdotter; Lindgren; Manke; Olsson; Persdotter; Rohl; Schulze; Schultz; Strobel; Svensdotter; von Breyman.
Paternal Line:
Axer/Auxer/Oxer; Bischoff/Bishop; Britton; Carrington; Carvell; Dierdorf; Dissinger; Esmongerin; Graf/Grove; Hasserman; Hauenstein; Kleiss; Lieder/Leader; Merki/Merck/Mark; Meyer; Mullerin; Niess; Schuetz; Steinman; Swartz; Traub/Troup; Wentz; Wilhelm; Wolf; and Ziegler. I'd add Sherman to that, since it's my maiden name, but I'm not sure that my grandfather was a Sherman. Nobody knows what his real name was ~ just what he wanted us to think! But that's another story altogether ~ check his profile for the story! (Sherman-1970)

Persons Of Interest

We are all interesting, but we all don't make the newspaper constantly! These ancestors could have made headlines (and some of them did!) and their stories are interesting today. I have compiled the list, but if there is an ** by their name, I have not finished their profile yet, so keep checking back.
  • Jeremiah Mark Carvell (Carvell-50) - Couldn't be anything but good - He was a Preacher Man!
  • Edwin Alonzo Niess (Niess-33) - Jeremiah's son-in-law, He was an attorney in Washington D.C.
  • Susannah Bischoff Leader Kaylor (Bischoff-231) - and let's not be discriminatory, let's include a strong woman into this mix! A divorce with a pre-nup in the 1800's?? Yup! This is my 4th great grandmother!
  • William Francis Sherman, Sr. (Sherman-1970) - Yes, my grandfather! I don't think he knew the difference between truth and fiction. Check out his story ~ see if you can fill in a couple of blanks for me!
  • William Francis Sherman, Jr. **(Sherman-1972) - I could not follow Edwin Niess without adding my father, the man Edwin groomed. This man was my hero and I miss him daily.
  • William Adolphus George von Breyman** (von Breyman-2) This man was an adventurer! He was a jack of all trades, spoke several languages, and eventually married at age 42 and fathered 10 children!

Linda, I have sources and relationships to add to Henry Wise Kelly (see my Comment there 28 days ago). The Edit tab is not visible to me so I requested Trusted List status but have not heard back.

Can you please grant me access to edit the Kelly-3670 profile?

No, Not at this time. Thank you for asking.
Linda, I keep running into you on genealogy sites and this is the first where I can contact you. I'm not certain if we have communicated previously, I apologize if we have but thought I would reach out. I hate putting email addresses where the public can see but what the heck. I am trying to figure out our connection. It appears to be through Christian Auxer. My email is [email address removed] Looking forward to connecting.

Hello Linda

I am managing a name study here on Wikitree for the Britton surname. My particular interest is for those originally from Fermanagh, Ireland.

Here’s the name study page - Brittton Name Study Category Page. As you add ancestors to Wikitree please add the relevant category so they appear on these pages too!

If you have DNA tested and your Britton ancestors came from Ireland we would love you to join us at FTDNA in our ‘Brittons of Ireland’ project. Even if you have tested at another DNA site, its free to transfer your data to FTDNA! I hope you join us! Brittons of Ireland - DNA project support page

Hi, I try to make corrections to any profile that I look at and enjoy. I try to keep to the new standard that pops up now. If it gives me a choice then I go to wikipedia to verify when it was United States, and for some reason the list came up with no "United States" and clicked on the first in the list. sorry I fixed it to be United States, since Pennsylvania was one of the original 13... thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Hi Linda, I don't know if "our" Lindgrens are related, it used to be a soldiers name so it appears in different parts of Sweden but they don't necessarily need to be related. I don't recognize Vånga or Kiaby in my research, not yet anyway :-)

Thanks for the new badge, that was very kind of you.

Sorry about that Linda, I had several tabs open at the same time to add the template to and must have forgotten to close the one with Ola Lindgrens profile before adding it. Thank you for letting me know. Do you have his ancestry beyond parents or would you like me to do some research?

I removed the template with the flags and added category for moving to Germany. Unfortunately there was no such category made and I need help setting it up so I removed that category again since it did not work.

And thanks for your kind words even if i messed up
