Biography

Private William Sherrer served in the United States Civil War.

William was born in 1826 in Henry County, Georgia. His parents were John S. Sherrer and Anne Campbell Speak. He was married to Martha Jane Vinson in Henry County in 1849. He moved his family to Randolph County, Alabama where he was living in 1860 in or near the town of Roanoke. His mother in law had also moved to Randolph County and was living near to him and Martha Jane.

When war came to the south and to Alabama in April of 1861 William James enlisted in the Confederate Army.

Military

William enlisted in Company E of the 17th Alabama Infantry. September 9, 1861. At that time Company E, of the 17th Alabama regiment, C.S.A., which was organized in this vicinity, went to join the army at the front. Wyley E. WHITE, uncle of Dr. William WHITE and others, was captain of this company and B. F. WEATHERS was first lieutenant.

William was wounded in the side at Vicksburg and he was furloughed for 30 days by the Medical Examining Board at Dalton, Georgia in December of 1863 for Disability with debility and emaciation from Febris Typhoides.

Life after the war

William survived the war and came home to Randolph County. He later moved to Blount County, Alabama after 1880. He lived there and was a farmer.

He received pension for services in Blount County, Alabama . He was wounded at Vicksburg, Mississippi. His wife died in 1892.

He died in 1903 in Blount County, Alabama. He is buried at the Antioch Baptist Cemetery, Liberty, Blount County, Alabama. [1]
