The most authoritaive account I have encountered is a book published in 1929, "Daniel L. Sherwood and His Paternal Ancestors" by Andrew Sherwood.

On page 72 he provides information regarding the Sherwood pioneers of Maryland from a letter by Francis B. Culver, a reputable genealogist. There we find that Francis Sherwood took the oath of Fidelity in 1646. He later notes that Francis' son Hugh was born in 1632 and gives Hugh's wife's name, Mary (thought by many to be a Brooke) and list his children, which includes both Daniel (who married Mary Hopkins) and Catherine (who married Ralph Rice)

The source provided is highly questionable as it provides no sources other than ged files submitted by users. In this case it is evident that there has been a generation of Daniel Sherwood left out and a confusion of his spouse, Mary Hopkins, as being the spouse of his father, Hugh Sherwood.
