Joseph was the son of Joseph Shirtz and Eva Schauermann. His parents never married. He was born and baptized[1] in 1816 and passed away in 1888. He was buried in the Clermont Cemetery, Clermont, Columbia County, New York. In 1848 he married Lena Reiffenberg.[2] He held several occupations in his lifetime, including wagon maker, tavern/inn keeper, mail carrier, farmer and master painter.
Joseph's father was married to two women and had children with both of them. However, Joseph was born after his father's first wife died and before he remarried someone else. Joseph's parents were never married.
More research is needed to confirm that this is the Joseph Schurtz who served in the Union army, 7th Regiment, New York Infantry (New Organization). Page: M551 roll 125 - US Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865 Ancestry.com
