George Washington Shotwell was born July 19, 1835 in Middlesex, New Jersey, the son of Clarkson Freeman Shotwell and Keziah Sutton Shotwell.
George was born when his mother was in her forties; he was, according to his daughter, "babied" because of this. [1]
George was married three times; his first wife Angeline Topping [2] died following childbirth complications. His second wife Nancy, died following an illness and birth of a stillborn child. He married his third wife, Susan, after moving to Nashville. [1]
George held a patent for the spring bottom mattress. (See photos). George's death is recorded in TN archives as being on July 5, 1906. [3] However, his headstone indicates July 5, 1907. [4]
