Biography

Hilda Shriver was born on November 2, 1883 in Union Mills, Carroll county, Maryland, the daughter of Thomas Herbert Shriver and Elizabeth Rosalie Lawson.

She was married on June 1, 1910 at Union Mills to her cousin, Robert Sargent Shriver, the son of Henry Shriver and Sarah Van Lear Perry. The couple were the parents of two sons.

Hilda Shriver died on August 18, 1977 at the home of her son T. Herbert Shriver II in Baltimore. Her obituary was published on August 19 in The Washington Star

Hilda S. Shriver Dies; Political Activist in Maryland

Hilda S. Shriver, 95, the matriarch of the Shriver family of Maryland who for many years was active in the state's Democratic politics, died yesterday at the home of her son, Herbert, in Baltimore.

Her other son, R. Sargent Shriver, an attorney, was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in the 1972 general election. Herbert Shriver is associated with the investment banking firm of Alex. Brown and Sons.

Mrs. Shriver was born in Union Mills, Md. Her father, Thomas Herbert Shriver, was adjutant general of Maryland and a leading political figure in Carroll County.

During her youth, Mrs. Shriver accompanied her father to many of his business and political meetings and was at the Democratic National Convention in 1912 in Baltimore when Woodrow Wilson was nominated for president. Her father was a delegate to that convention.

She also frequently served as a personal secretary to James Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, who spent many summers at the Shriver home in Union Mills.

Mrs. Shriver made her debut in Baltimore in 1900. In 1902 she was graduated with highest honors from Notre Dame College in Baltimore.

In 1912 she was married by Gibbons to her cousin, Robert Sargent Shriver, of Cumberland, Md. After their marriage they lived in Westminster, Md., where he was vice president of the B.F. Shriver Co. Later they lived in Baltimore, where he became vice president and director of the Baltimore Trust Co., predecessor to the Maryland National Bank.

In the 1920s, the Shrivers had formed the Catholic Evidence League in Baltimore. They were active in political campaigns of Albert C. Ritchie, William Cabell Bruce and Millard Tydings and other political leaders of that period. They were particularly active ink the successful campaign which led Maryland to refuse to adopt a Volstead Act and later in the successful effort to repeal the 18th amendment.

The Shrivers moved to New York City in 1929, where he was in the commercial and investment banking business. Together they helped form the National Catholic Convert League, later called the St. Paul Guild, in New York City.

Her husband died in 1942.

On the occasion of her 90th birthday in November, 1972, Mrs. Shriver was feted with a birthday party in the Morris Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore where Gov. Marvin Mandel presented her a Distinguished Citizenship Certificate of the State of Maryland. Mandel also declared her birthday to be the Senior Citizens Day for Maryland. Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer gave Mrs. Shriver a proclamation in her honor on behalf of the people of Baltimore.

Mrs. Shriver was a member of the Mt. Vernon Club in Baltimore for many years and was associated with the Society of Colonial Wars and the Society of Colonial Dames.

Besides her sons she leaves eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen on North Charles Street ink Baltimore. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Westminster.[1]
