Biography

One founding resident of the Maryland Heights area, Walker Shumate, is known mostly for the street that bears his name. Shumate Avenue intersects Dorsett Road near Fee Fee Road. Shumate was born Oct. 12, 1809, in Fauquier County, Virginia. A schoolteacher, he and his wife Sarah moved to Missouri in 1831. They first lived in East Manchester, but eventually settled in the Pattonville area, where Shumate founded the area’s first private school, the Shumate Academy (also known as Oakley Seminary). He taught astronomy, Greek, Latin and other classical subjects not typically studied in frontier schools. The school laid the foundation for what would eventually become Pattonville School District. Meanwhile, the Shumates built their permanent home on a large plot at Fee Fee and Dorsett Roads. Shumate was also a minister who spent time as a “circuit rider” preaching by horseback to Methodist churches in neighboring communities. In 1840, he became a deacon and preached in many local churches. He helped establish Methodist churches in the area, including Kirkwood, Mount Olive and Mount Zion. Shumate, a Mason, was well respected in his community for his character, kindness and leadership. Extremely active in the fight against slavery, he was a delegate of the Missouri Colonization Society, which proposed sending emigrants from Missouri to Liberia to create a Missouri colony of free blacks. He took the radical step of freeing his own slaves on April 29, 1856 – the first person in the area to do so. Loss as well as leadership characterized Shumate’s life. His wife Sarah died in 1836, ten days after the birth of her third child, Sallie. Her son Richard died in infancy, and another child, born in 1832, survived. Just a year after Sarah’s death, Shumate married Sarah Ann Quisenberry. She too died shortly after the birth of her third child, just six days after daughter Susan was born in 1848. The other children from this marriage were Virginia and Charles. Shumate’s third marriage was to Mary Massey, widow of Captain John Massey. She and Shumate married in 1851. Their children were Mary Dorsett, Charlot, James Edward and Anna Esta. Walker Shumate died at his Maryland Heights home on July 27, 1872. He is buried in Fee Fee Cemetery with his second and third wives and other family members.
