Anna Shurtleff, daughter of Benoni Shurtleff & Submit Pike was born 20 January 1756 in Southborough, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[1]
In 1778, Anna married Stetson Holmes, the son of William Holmes and Elizabeth Hamlin[2] who were living in Winchester, New Hampshire. Stetson and Anna were likely living in Winchester until 1785 as the first 5 children were all born there. The family then relocated to Hartland, Vermont where 6 more children were born. According to Stetson's biography, he relocated to Vermont as he was a staunch loyalist and Vermont had declared itself an independent British republic. When Vermont became part of the United States in 1791, as a Loyalist and Tory, Stetson was likely discriminated against. About 1800, Stetson and Anna along with 5 of their children relocated to Bridgeport, Cape Breton in the Colony of Nova Scotia.
Stetson and Anna remained in Cape Breton, founding the community of Homeville. Anna passed away in Homeville, Cape Breton 20 November 1841.[3]
