S. A. SHUTTERS COMMITS SUICIDE FRIDAY NIGHT SEYMOUR GROCER TURNS GUN UPON HIMSELF IN BED Dies in Less Than Half an Hour After Shot Crashes Entirely Through Head. SENDS CHILDREN TO SHOW Warns Them of Sad Christmas-- Poor Health and Financial Worry Assigned For Act. "Have a good time for you are going to have a sad Christmas," Shedrick A. Shutters, age 68, Seymour grocer, told his children Friday evening, after giving them money to go to the show. Then bidding his wife goodnight, he went in his room, undressed, lay down on the bed and shot himself to death. He died about 7:50 o'clock, within less than half an hour after the shot was fired. The steel jacketed bullet, from a .22 automatic pistol, entered his right temple, penetrated the brain, and left the head through the left temple. Dr. E. B. Chenoweth, who was called within a few minutes, arrived before Mr. Shutters died. Poor health and some financial worry were believed to have led Mr. Shutters to take his own life. A number of times it had been necessary to hide poison and guns he had obtained, Mrs. Shutters said. On last Sunday she said he asked for some poison, explaining that he wanted it for his finger. Friday Mrs. SHutters said she assisted her husband at the grocery on East Second street, and that she saw the gun with which he took his life, over there. She questioned him and he told her a Mr. Brooks wanted him to sell it. She did not know that he brought the revolver home with him. He arrived home about 6:30 o'clock but ate no supper, saying that he wasn't hungry. After the children had left he told his wife he wanted to talk to her and opened the conversation by saying "I'm getting old, almost 70 now." "In case I'm not here in the morning open the stores, so the perishable goods won't be lost," Mr. Shutters told his wife, and explaining some other business matters, he discussed funeral arrangements and said he was going to bed. "He had talked that way before," Mrs. Shutters said, "and I didn't realize he had done it until I heard the shot. I went in the bedroom and he was lying so quietly that I thought I might be mistaken. I switched on the light and then saw what had happened. The pistol was hanging loosely in his hand. I took it from him, laid it on a stand, and then called for help." Mrs. Shutters said that her husband feared he had cancer of the stomach and had been despondent over his health for about a year. He had operated his store on East Second street while his wife took charge of the store in Glenlawn. Mr. Shutters was born in Indiana, May 10, 1860, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shutters. About 25 years ago he moved to Seymour, and since that time has been in the grocery business here. In 1910 he was united in marriage to Miss Katie Boling. Besides his wife he is survived by four children, Mrs. Addie Smith, Raymond, Shedrick and Robert Edward, all of Seymour; three half sisters, Mrs. Goldel(?) Baker, Columbus; Mrs. George VanPelt, Indianapolis; Miss Mavie Shutters, Indianapolis. He was a member of the Moose lodge. Funeral services will be held at the house, 507 Centennial street, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of the Rev. Homer Smith, of Indianapolis, with burial in Riverview. Coroner W. A. Dickmeyer held inquest at the Voss mortuary this morning at 9:30 o'clock. "Death resulted from a bullet wound fired by his own hand," was the coroner's verdict following the inquest.
