Carmen was born in 1922, in Canada of Spanish descent. She was the daughter of Jamaica-born Roland Silvera and his English wife Dorothy White. She moved to Coventry, England, with her family when she was a child.

She was one of the survivors of the sinking of the "SS Athenia" in 1939.

She found fame as an actor in the 1960s drama Z Cars, but is best known for her role in the 1980s situation comedy 'Allo 'Allo.

She met and married an actor named John Cunliffe. They divorced following a miscarriage.

She passed away in 2002.

Research notes

Google has her married to John Cunliffe ( 1941-1948). This is not correct.

According to Wikipedia Carmen was not a passenger on the Athenia, her name was taken off the passenger list shortly before it sailed. However no citation is given.
