Jules "Miles" Simmons was born around 28 Aug 1839, at Hastings, Upper Canada, [1] and died on 15 Nov 1916, [2] at Brockway, St. Clair, Michigan, United States. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Yale, St. Clair, Michigan, United States, [1] as are both his wives, Mary Ann Losie and Mary Collins Rapley. [3] [4] Miles was the son of David Simmons (1816-1879) and Emily Hicks (1819-1901). [1] Regarding the children of David and Emily, the information available varies according to the source.
According to Carroll Baumgardner's "Genealogy", there were five children: [5]
In the 1851 Census, there are also five children, but no dates are given: Miles, Albert, Samuel, Marthy, and Jane. [6]
In the 1860 census, there are six children with slightly different dates, [7]
and in 1870, three children, one of whom could be a grandchild: [9]
A newspaper clipping in Miles' Find a Grave Index site states that there were seven children, four sons and three daughters, who are not named, [1] but who may have been Miles, Albert, Samuel, Martha, James, Mary and Jane.
Miles was a Farmer and farmed 100 acres of his own land but also served Worth Township (Sanilac, Michigan, United States) in several official capacities, such as Justice of the Peace and Treasurer. He was a Republican. He served in the Civil War, as did two of his brothers, Warner and Samuel. All three were wounded, although serving separately in different war areas. [5] He served three years and 2 months, having joined the 10th Michigan Volunteers Infantry Regiment. [1] He was hospitalized in several army locations before he was discharged honorably from the army in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States, on 27 March 1865. [5] He was a member of the Post H.H. Nims, GAR, in Lexington. [1] Regarding his brothers, Warner was hospitalized with serious wounds but he recovered sufficiently to marry and father two children, Albert and Carrie (Trempere). Sam lost a leg but married and farmed quite successfully, the father of six children; John, Howard, Sarah, Florence, Lily and Ina. After the children married, Sam and his wife moved into the town of Yale, Michigan, where they are buried. [5]
Miles married twice, the first time to, Mary Ann Losie (1840-1906) on 29 Jun 1866 at Burtchville, St. Clair, Michigan, United States. [10] [5] The marriage ended with Mary Ann's death on 10 Dec 1906 at Brockway, St. Clair, Michigan, United States. [3] He remarried on 04 Aug 1908, at Yale, St. Clair, Michigan, United States, to Mary Collins Rapley, who had been previously married to Arthur Hennessy in 1874. Her parents are listed as Thomas Rapley and Emma Cooper. Miles' second marriage has not been posted in Wikitree at this time. [11]

Regarding Family Roots Miles Simmons was of German descent. Only two of the first four branches of his family are known, the Simmons (originally Simon), who migrated from Germany and were part of the large exodus of Germans that took place from London to New York in 1709-1710, and the Hicks (no information).
