Alice was born about 1583. Alice was the child of Unnamed Father Crosse. Alice passed away about 1680. [1]
Alice was named executrix of the will of William Crosse 31 May 1621 in London, Middlesex, England.
"WILLIAM CROSSE of St. Clement Danes, Middlesex, tailor, 31 May 1621, proved 26 July 1621. My body to be burried in the church of St. Clement Danes near my mother. To the poor of said parish ten dozen of bread to be distributed among them at the day of my funeral. To my son in law Robert Simpson, at one and twenty, the hundred pounds stand bound to Doctor Poe. If he die before that. then forty pounds of it to my wife and the other threescore pounds to my two children, Thomas Crosse and Elnor Crosse, at their several ages of one and twenty. To Thomas all that tenement and malt house which I purchased of Thomas Jarrett, situate &c. in Dartford, Kent. To Elnor a messuage in Dartford purchased of Mr. Swarland, minister. If either of said children die before coming of age, then I devise, give and bequeath unto the children of Robert Okes, my brother in law, had by a former wife, and also his children by my sister Agathie, ten pounds, part and portion alike. To daughter Elnor twenty pounds, one of my silver beakers and six silver spoons. The rest to wife Alice whom I make sole executrix; and I appoint my friends John Glasse and Robert Chippe overseers. Dale, 65."
The will of William Crosse, the tailor, establishes several facts relative to this family. William mentions his son in law Robert Simpson, a minor. Son in law at the time of this will was a broad term that often included step son in todays terms. This shows that Alice was previously married to a Simpson. William and Alice had at least two minor children, Thomas and Elinor b. before 1621. William's mother was buried at St. Clement Danes in London. William had a sister, Agathie Cross who was married to Robert Oakes. Robert Oakes had been previously married and had children by a former wife as well as Agathie Crosse. (The IGI lists an Agathie Cross b. 1582 in St. Clement Danes.) Since this will was proven 26 Jul 1621, William Crosse the tailor died before this date and likely died in England. He cannot be the same William Crosse who died in Talbot Co., MD in 1679.
This could be the same William Crosse the IGI indicates was christened 3 Aug 1588 at Saint Michael in London. I suspect that he was the nephew of Sir Robert Crosse born to Sir Robert's brother William Crosse. I base this on several pieces of circumstantial evidence. There are several members of the Okes family who apparently worshiped at Saint Michael parish. The Okes surname is rare in England of this period. William Crosse was a tailor and other members of the Bourne family were listed as 'Merchant Taylors of London' in the will of John Bourne in 1622. John Bourne's daughter married John Crosse who I believe is the brother of William Crosse the Tailor.
