Biography

This lady is noticed on record when she marries James Craigie, Baron of Hupe.

According to the source material[1] the family of Craigie, in the Orkneys, existed from an early date. James of Craigy, dominus de Hupe, is the first of the line noticed on the record when he married a daughter (not named in source) of Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney.

There is no certainty in his lineage but he is supposed to have accompanied the Earl to Orkney, when he received an investiture of the earldom from the king of Denmark, in 1379, and was probably a son of John de Craigie and Margaret de Mondofe.[2]

Family

Although the date of the marriage is not provided the record suggests that there was at least 2 sons and a daughter. Noticed on record:

  • John de Craigy; Noticed 1367/8 under a Grant of Safe Passage by Edward III, where he is degined as "armigere de Scot" which might be implied that he bore arms. He was one of the barons present at the coronation of Robert II. at Scone, March 27, 1371. This John de Craigy had an only daughter, Margaret, domina de Craigie, heiress of Craigie and Braidwood, who married Sir John Stewart, ancestor of the Stewarts of Craigiehall.

Research notes

She is said to be Margaret, daughter of Henry St. Clair, Earl of Orkney, and was married to James of Cragy, Laird of Hupe in Orkney. Erroneously called daughter (vs. granddaughter) of Henry Sinclair of Orkney and his wife Elizabeth, dau. of Malise of Stratherne in a passport by the Lawman of Orkney and Canons of the Chapter of St. Magnus 10 Nov 1422.[3]
