Biography
Mary Singer was the mother of painter John Singer Sargent.
She was born around 1826 in Massachusetts, the daughter of John and Mary Singer[1].
She married Fitz William Sargent 27 June 1850 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Penn Square Presbyterian Church.
Her passport application from 3 April 1891 in Cairo, Egypt (where she was living “on account of her health”, and had been since October 1881) stated that she was born 24 April 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she also had a permanent residence in the USA at the time. Her son John S also applied for a passport then.
Mary’s will was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In it, Emily and John Singer Sargent (both of England at the time) were the executors. Mary’s will was dated 18 May 1900 - she died 21 January 1906 at 10 Carlyle Mansions, Cheyne Walk, (her daughter Emily’s home) per the will.
