Biography

Francis Singletary was a laborer and died before 1617, his wife Agnes was a widow in 1617 Frome Parish records we know that both Ralph and his sister Joan, who married John Syson had sons named Richard. Richard Syson was bpt. 13 June 1619.

Within the south Lincolnshire region of ‘the Wash’ the first known record of a family baptising children by the name of Singletary was that one at Surfleet (for its location, see Speed’s 1610 map of Lincolnshire). This family of Frances Singletary with wife Agnes and documented children William, Joan, Ralph and Theophilus has become also, through probably correct speculation, the family of Richard Singletary of Salem and Haverhill, MA (father or step-father of ‘Jonathan Dunham alias Singletary’). Frances Singletary (b. 1559, d.1617) married Agnes c. 1584 William Joan (Syngletarye) Ralphe Theophilus Richard chr. 1599 chr.. 1594 chr. 1592 chr. 1608 b. 1595-8 Surfleet, Lincs. Surfleet Gosberton, Surfleet [1]

Research Note

DNA evidence does not support Francis being the father of Richard Singletary who lived his life in America.

Singletary-115 and Singletary-41 appear to represent the same person because: similar dates, same wife's name....all references to Massachusetts are incorrect....settlement in Massachusetts did not happen until long after this person lived.

Lets remember that Massachusetts did not exist until 1620 when the Pilgrims arrived.

I found a tree that shows that Francis's parents names are Richard Singletary and Susannah Cooke. Susannah Cook was born in 1541 in Norfolk, England and died 1570 in Salem, Massachusetts. Richard Dunham Singletary was born circa 1540 in Denham, England and died 1570 in Salem, Massachusetts. I am not sure that this information is correct but may be worth looking into. I say this only because they were personal family trees but the information matched.
