Biography

Owen was born about 1755 possibly in North Carolina. That he was son of Edward "old Ned" Sizemore is supported by the presence of Edward, another Edward, and Owen "Sysmore" together in the same record, same time frame, from same location, all being charged with the same crime-- suggesting a probable family relation.[1] He and the second (younger) Edward Sizemore also end up in Hawkins, Tennessee.

Owen received two Grants from the state of North Carolina in 1794. Grant No. 1291 for 50 acres of land in Wilkes County, North Carolina on the 9th of July, 1794; and Grant No. 1330 for 50 acres of land in Wilkes County, North Carolina on the 6th of December 1794.[2]

Owen purchased one hundred acres of land in Hawkins County, Tennessee in a deed dated 29th August 1810 from John Breedin. The deed reads in part as follows:

"Know all me by these presents that I John Breedin of Sullivan County and State of Tennessee for & valuable consideration to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell to Owen Sizemore one hundred acres of land lying and being in the county of Hawkins and State aforesaid being part of four hundred acres granted to Epraigm Donlop by the state of North Carolina and bearing date the twenty seventh of July one thousand seven hundred and ninety three and to be laid of at the north east end of survey so as to include the improvements which the said Owen now holds & extend so far along said survey as to include a stable near a spring on said land and said line to extend from the south west line straight to south east line so as to include the one hundred acres aforesaid, with the appurtenances thereto belonging and I do forever warrant and defend the said one hundred acres of land to the said Owen Sizemore against me my heirs executors administrators or assigns or any person claiming by them or through or under them. In testimony where of I have here unto set my hand and afixed my seal this 29 Day of August 1810. Attest James McKinney George Sisemore Harmonis Gray Wm Stapleton" [signed] John Breedin"[3]

Owen appears in the 1830 Federal census in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Owen's household appears as follows: 1 male age 20 thru 29; 1 male age 70 thru 79; 1 female age 15 thru 19; and 1 female age 60 thru 69.[4]

Owen made his last Will & Testament on the 12th of March 1836; it will reads as follows:

"I Owen Sizemore being of sound and perfect mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form as follows
First, I give and bequeath unto my loving wife all my real and personal estate her life time, except
Secondly, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Alcey a sorrel mare, a saddle and bridle, and a young cow. Also two feather beds and furniture.

Research Notes

Tabitha Sizemore Chaney was not the daughter of Owen Sizemore. Tabitha Sizemore Chaney has been removed as a daughter of Owen Sizemore as there are no sources to documents to show that Tabitha's maiden name was Sizemore or that there was a family relationship with Owen Sizemore.

Tabitha Sizemore Chaney was born at least 5 years before Owen Sizemore married and began having children based on her age brackets in the 1830 and 1840 Federal census in Grainger county, Tennessee. See: 1830 census: "United States Census, 1830," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHP9-61T : 19 November 2020), William Canay, Grainger, Tennessee, United States; citing 392, NARA microfilm publication M19, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 180; FHL microfilm 24,538. Owen Sizemore's will does not include a daughter with the married name of Chaney, and Tabitha was married to William Chaney before 1836 when Owen Sizemore made his will.

Owen Sizemore list his daughters by their married names, in his will dated 31st January, 1836 recorded in Hawkins county, Tennessee. Owen's daughter Tabitha, whose given name is mispelled in the will but her married name is spelled out very clearly in Owen's will as "Anderson". Owen Sizemore's daughter Tabitha Sizemore was married to Aaron Anderson of Hawkins county, Tennessee, and this Tabitha Sizemore was born about 1805 in Tennessee based on her age and place of birth in the 1850 Federal census in Hawkins county, Tennessee in the household of Aaron Anderson.[6]

No family relationship is shown in the records of Grainger and Jefferson counties Tennessee between Tabitha Chaney and her husband William Chaney to the Sizemore family. None of William Chaney's deeds or other transactions are witnessed by the Sizemore and related families.

  • Owen Sizemore is believed to be the son of Edward 'Ned' Sizemore & Elizabeth Jackson. Over 2000 of the descendants of Owen, and his brothers George, and Lydia Blevins, (wife of James Blevins) filed Eastern Cherokee applications. None received benefits because none of them was in the Cherokee enumerations. Owen Sizemore was born in Halifax County Virginia lived in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1777, then moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina, then to South Carolina, back to a farm on Prater's Creek (present day Ashe county, North Carolina), sold this farm to his brother George Sizemore. He then moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee about 1800. He died in Hawkins County before 1840. He married Elizabeth Bingham or Brigman, born about 1760. She died after 1840. He lived with his son, Owen Jr., as noted in the 1840 census. He left a will written 12 March 1836. It is recorded in Will Book 31, Hawkins County, Tennessee. It names eight daughters: Elizabeth Willis; Pheraby Monohan; Sally Brown; Nancy Stapleton; Tabithy Anderson; Lidda Sizemore; Aggy Stapleton & Alcey. He also names two sons- Solomon & Owen Jr. There may have been some other children but there is no proof. Jack Goins said the 1800 Ashe County, North Carolina Census, lists two daughters who have not been identified. The oldest may have been Polly and she may have been married before they came to Tennessee. A daughter Cynthia is named in ECA # 34400 & 40116. Another mention is made in ECA 34400 of a daughter Tulesther who may have been Tabitha? The "T" in Tabithy is hard to read in the will and looks to be transcribed as abril-y.

Owen, Edward and George moved to South Carolina about 1781. These events suggest they may have fled NC after the insurrection, which may have led to their father Ned's hanging by Col. Cleveland, Military records show that all three were paid as Royalist in Rev. War, Owen & Edward were paid as SC Royalist February. 24 --April 24, 1781. Owen was still in SC 28 July 1784 when his daughter Lydia was born, then he moved back and purchased land on Prater's Creek in Wilkes County NC. He sold this farm to his brother George , and moved to Hawkins County, TN about 1799-1800. Owen lived in the Clinch, Pumpkin Valley area of Hawkins County, and near the present day Hancock County, Tennessee Line.

Is Cynthia his daughter? Not mentioned in his will, so doubtful.
