Biography

David Skeels was born in 1749 to John Skeels and Patience Hinman. His birth or christening records have not yet been located.

According to Carvosso Sharpe (1898), David and his brother John “settled in Cohoes, New York”. John settled in Vermont, but David is located in Albany, New York during the 1790 US Census.[1]

He may be the David Skeels who died in 1833 and was buried in Highgate, Vermont.[2]

Research Notes

  • This is not the same David Skeels who fought in the Civil War and died in 1864, buried the National Point Cemetery.
  • This is not the same David Skeels Sr. who was born 24 Mar 1746 and baptized 1 June 1746 to Thomas Skeel and Prudence Slosson. See reference: Ancestry.com. Now Rev. Samuel Alvabel Skeele did the early tree (1853). His son Andrew gave it to Chipman Skeels in 1906.

Now mostly Chipman Skeels tree, 6th Edition (1906-1931) has David Skeele (John, John, John):

Sharon has had to take a break on this. Looks right according to Thoesen's tree. Thanks all of you. Now #12 Has the following siblings for William Skeele b. 2 April 1792 born to David Skeele and Lydia Powell, whichever one she is.
  1. 31. i.David Skeele Junior born 1779.

ii.Anna Skeele 1782-19 July 1821; married Elijah Hungerford.

  1. 32. iii.Amos Skeele 1783-5 Oct 1846

iv.Hiram Skeele born about 1785 died young. v.Eunice Skeele 14 May 1787-23 May 1883; married Benjamin Wait. vi.Alvira Skeele 1789-1870; married Ellory Staples. Viii.Rhoda Skeele 28 June 1794-11 Oct 1857, both Vermont; married David Tyron. ix.Sarah Ann Skeele 1797-1872 Evanston Illinois; married Elijah Hungerford. x.Lydia Beach/Beech 14 May 1797-1883. Please check your sources. The birth record for David Skeels states that he was born in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut on 24 Mar 1746, and baptized on 1 Jun 1746. His parents are named Thomas and Prudence, so 24 March is the correct date of birth. I see no source that verifies that he died in Ohio. The sourced DAR record states he died in Vermont. The suggested find-a-grave in a comment below is for the wife of a John Skeele, that John was born in 1747 and is the supposed sibling of David. Nowhere on the find-a-grave is David listed. If you click on John's memorial it does show a sibling David that was born 2 Mar 1746 in Connecticut and died in Vermont on 17 Jan 1833, David Skeels Find-A-Grave.

I believe this is actually a duplicate profile of Skeels-123. The birth date on F.A.G. is wrong: Note: Stone only shows year of death. Birth date on Find a Grave is incorrect and belongs to another David Skeels, Sr.:Find A Grave|Memorial ID# 30604241: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/30604241/david-skeels. Vermont vital records show he was born about 3 years after the David Skeels Sr. born in 1746 to Thomas Skeels and Prudence Slosson: ↑ "Vermont Vital Records, 1760-1954", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V8M1-MRX : 14 April 2020), David Skeels, 1833.

I also believe that it is a duplicate of Skeels-123, however, I believe that you are the one that had the correct parents listed. I did not get his dates from find-a-grave, I only mentioned it because there was information that is incorrect on that memorial. The birth record came from Vital records and the Baptism from Church records. Looking at them again they actually only say Kent, Connecticut. These are the links, if you do not have an Ancestry subscription let me know. I can create a share link, and add the sources and links to the shared links to your research section so that you can see them. Kent Vital Records 1739-1852, Connecticut (Birth) and Connecticut, U.S., Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920, Volume 055 Kent. You have the FamilySearch copy of the birth record.

I do see the estimated date of birth on his death record, which is just that estimated and not always reliable, especially when there is no full date. It not uncommon in that time period and earlier for people's ages to be guessed/estimated and often very wrong both in census and death records. On my gg-grandmother's death record they recorded her name as Martha, her name was Sarah Matilda, I have no idea how they managed that one. That find-a-grave has the 1746 birth date, but as I said I noted there are problems with that memorial as a whole. It looks like it needs to be sorted out too. This would be a reason find-a-grave is only used for clues and not sources due to the mistakes that are made on there.

If you can find any sources that connect the parents listed on the other profile as the correct parents please let me know. The other profile manager is at a loss as to how to prove it, as no records have been found, except the ones for the David born to Thomas and Prudence. Those sources are listed on his profile too. He is looking and trying to figure this out. I still believe that you had the correct parents attached, but if not then I hope records can be found to prove that the other parents are the correct ones. I believe they are duplicates and need to be merged, but the parent issue needs to be figured out first.

Thank you for all your work on this family line!

I no longer believe they are duplicate profiles. All I am missing is a definitive birth record for this David Skeel to prove this.
Thank you, for working on these. I understand, I have my own family whose, who. :)

I hope that you are able to find the birth date. This is a hard time period to source. It was even worse in the South.

No direct birth record yet, but a military source in Massachusetts that says 1750 and the Vermont Vital Record that says 1749. It was enough to show it wasn’t 1746 Connecticut.
Excellent detective work Veronica! I am glad that you found something. That should help keep them from being conflated again.

No I made a mistake. 8. David Skeel (Thomas & Prudence nee Slosson Skeel, John, John) born 27 March 1746; married Unknown Mrs. David Skeels 1766. 2 sons-David & Jeduthan both born about 1768.

12.David Skeele (John III-wife Patience Hinman, John II, John I) BAPTIZED 16 March 1746. He died at Skeels corner. David married Lydia Sarah Powell at Lanesborough, Massachusetts. NOTE: Patience Hinman born to Benjamin Hinman (Baptized Apr 1692) & Grandfather Edward of Stratford. Benjamin had a son Benjamin before he married. Mother was of Roxbury. He married Sarah Sherman (Sherman-2582). Sarah & Benjamin had a son Col. Benjamin Hinman 1720-1810 AKA Hinman III or Hinman-392. Both have living descendants (Wikitree.com 25 Nov 2019.

Hello, Please make whatever corrections need to be made to clear up the parents/spouse on these 2 profiles. Thank you! For now I will postpone the merge since the parents are still different.

Skeels-123 and Skeel-27 appear to represent the same person because: I must have entered a family by mistake. Clearly Rhoda Skeel (Skeele) is this persons wife. but the parents, and I assume all children belong to one of the parents family. Conflict as to which parents are the correct ones. Needs REVIEW big time.

Which parents are correct? Need to determine before the merge can be done.

I think our best clue is from Find-a-Grave. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/132195326

from there we can add Phoebe's mother and father to shore her up! Let me know.... Kirt
