Biography

Betty Jean was born in 1925. She was the daughter of William Skuse and Leila Dunn. She passed away in 2007.

Betty Jean (Skuse) Penfold, 82, of Onaway, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at home. She was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Onaway, the daughter of William and Leila (Dunn) Skuse. On April 27, 1946, she married Emerson T. Penfold Sr., in Onaway, at the home of elder Burt. Betty Jean had been a lifelong resident of the Onaway area. She was a homemaker and for a few years worked at Circuit Control of Harbor Springs and then for the wire factory in Atlanta. Betty Jean was a member of the Community of Christ Church, Women's Group and Choir, and the Waverly Friendship Club. She enjoyed singing, music and playing the guitar. She was a skilled seamstress, quilter, and was known for her "rag rugs" which she sold at area craft shows. Betty Jean also liked going to garage sales, gardening and cooking.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 61 years, Emerson Penfold Sr. of Onaway; daughters, Peggy Penfold of Onaway and Jean (Denny) Morris of Copemish; sons, Emerson Jr. (Barbara) Penfold of Onaway, Wayne (Nancy) Penfold of Cheboygan, Steven (Julie) Penfold of Perry and David Penfold of Onaway; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Betty Jean will also be missed by her sister, Willette (Lealand) Sagle of Manitoulin Island, Canada; brothers, George and Tom (Peggy) Skuse both of Onaway and Sidney (Betty) Skuse of East Jordan; aunt, Nora Skuse of Onaway; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jacob Penfold; great grandson, Hunter Morris; great granddaughter, Hunter Chapp; sisters, Lovina and Darine; and brother, William.[1]
