Justice of the Peace for the Cinque Ports. He resided at Ripple Court, near Lyminge in Kent, and a lithograph of the house in 1838 is labeled "The Seat of John Baker Sladen, Esq."[1] He might have rebuilt this house to replace an existing structure, See Research Notes.
Some entries in Burkes' show suffixes "D.L." and "J.P," presumably for "Doctor of Law" (?) and "Justice of the Peace." See Research Notes.
1851 Census shows "Of 3 Portland Terrace, Southampton."[citation needed]
There are conflicting claims as to whether his father Joseph Sladen purchased, resided in or built a house known as Ripple Court, near Lyminge, Kent, in about 1795 [2] Some report that the present house was rebuilt in 1828 by his son, John Baker Sladen at this profile, possibly to replace an existing 16th century house, perhaps the residence used by Joseph. The estate, reportedly extended in 1887, was on the market in 2020. [3]
References to this man with birth, wife and marriage date appear in some editions of Burke's Landed Gentry from 1847-49, 1898, and 1906. The 1898 edition implies a 2x great grandfather for the man at this profile as "Benjamin Sladen, d. 1695," and mentions descent "for three generations, by second sons." [4]
