Philip Thomas Slaten, son of Shelby Slaten and Sarah (Stull) Slaten was born about 1835 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.
On 23 November 1854, in Hopkins County, he married Mary McMan, daughter of Thomas McMan.[1]
During the Civil War, Philip (listed on military records as P.T. Slaton/Slayton) served as a Private in Phelan’s Regiments (commanded by William G. Phelan), Searcy’s Battalion, Sharp Shooters A-P with father Shelby (listed on military records as Shelby Slaton/Slayton). P.T. Slaton/Slayton was captured 13 May 1862 in Stoddard County, Missouri. P. T. arrived 20 August 1862 at Military Prison in Alton, Illinois. On 23 September 1862, he was sent from Alton Military Prison to Vicksburg, Mississippi, to be exchanged.
