Biography

Josiah/Joseph Browder Slaton was born 8 October 1823 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.^[1] He was the son of James Slaton and Elizabeth "Chelly" Bailey.

He was licensed to marry Sarah Elizabeth Todd, Feb 5, 1849, in Hopkins County, Kentucky,. according to the Hopkins Marriage Index. ^[2]

He was recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census as Josiah B. Slaton, age 26, living and farming in Hopkins County, Kentucky with wife Sarah E. Slaton, age 18. In addition, 28-year old farmer Ellis Gobbard lived with them.^[1] Ten years later, he was recorded as J. B. Slaton, age 36, living and farming in Hopkins County (P.O. Madisonville), Kentucky with wife Sarah and three children, Jas B, Wm T and Ella Slaton. ^[3] Ten years later, he was recorded as Josiah. B. Slaton, age 47, living and farming in Hopkins County (P.O. Madisonville), Kentucky with wife Sarah and two children in addition to those above, Elizabeth and John T. Slaton. Also in the household is Sarah Jagoe or Jagor, cook, 37, "white", and John Jagoe or Jagor, 6, "black". ^[4]

Census continuations name him as Joseph and their children as: James B., William T. or L., Ella, Elizabeth, John T., Charles, Ada and Lena Slaton. ^{[5] [6]} This accords with widow Sarah's 1910 census report as having borne 11 children, 8 alive. ^[7]

He died in 1900. ^[8]
