John Balis Slaton was born 7 October 1827 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.[1][2] He was the son of son of James Slaton and Elizabeth Chelly (Bailey) Slaton.[1][2] In the 1850 U.S. Census, John B. Slaton was recorded as 23 years old, living and farming in Hopkins County, Kentucky with his parents and siblings.[1]
He was married 11 December 1850 in Hopkins County, Kentucky to America V. Pritchet [Pritchett].[3]
John and America V. (Pritchett) Slaton have three issue implied: James W, Martha A., Alice and Colby Slaton, [4] with stepchildren Walt?/Watt, Aggie and William in 1880 census. [5] However, it is unclear if Ann in 1880 census is another wife with children by a previous marriage. If Ann is America, where were these children in 1870? Some Slaton gravestones in Grapevine Cemetery in Hopkins County are carved as young children of J B and A V Slaton. Martha A and James W appear to have died young, but this also is unclear, see Research Notes.
All of this census family is listed as "white," noted here because a linkage presented here to son Samuel J Slaton might be from family lore. Samuel is listed as "mulatto" or "black" in census, but linked by C M Ashby as a son of John B and the woman Hannah Dolin found "Keeping house" in Samuel's 1870 household.[6] Such purported liaisons are sometimes recorded as oral history or a bible record, rarely as a civil record. Birth records were not kept for children born of slave/slave owner "relationships" but CM Ashby's Ancestry DNA test shows shared DNA with several confirms ancestors of John and Elizabeth (Hibbs) Slayden's son, James Wesley Slaton, and grandson, John Balis Slaton, who is believed to be the father of Samuel Slaton, who is listed as a mulato and son of former slave, Hanna (Bailey) Dolin.
1860 US census for Hopkins County Kentucky lists more than one "J B Slaton," none obviously the John B at this entry, and 1860 Slave Census shows numerous people in bondage to Slatons, including to Chelly Slaton, mother of this entry.
He was a widower by 1900, and he died 9 June 1911 in Hopkins County, Kentucky [2] [7] and was buried in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, Anton, Hopkins County, Kentucky.[8]
