Biography

William was born in Crondall Hampshire about 1831. He is the son of Thomas Slingo and Jane Javes. Since we could locate no birth or christening record, birth date and location have been gleaned from census data.

Research Note

Some of the information here is a bit sketchy, and we would note that a lot of the research came from the Slingo/Molloy family website. William, after some conflicts with the law in his early years (see below), married Elizabeth Warcham in 1855, at about his age 24. There appear to be no children from this marriage. We see an unverified death record for Elizabeth from 1863 in Farnham, Surrey. Then, William remarried in 1883, to Maria Bolton (nee Upson), and within a year or so, they have a daughter, Amy Florence. By the time of the 1901 census, Maria appears to be widowed, although we can find no verifiable death record for William. We have recorded his death date as being 'after 1884'.

The following notation regarding what appears to be incorrect info on the Bolton marriage record comes from the Slingo/Molloy website: The father Shown on his Marriage Cert. is George. It's believed that William might have been brought up by his grandfather and thought that he was his father, or could have been ashamed of his natural father.

The following notation regarding criminal activity also from the Slingo/Molloy website: Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Saturday, July 19, 1851; Issue 2702. CROWN COURT (before Mr Justice Coleridge) Trial of Prisoners. William Slingo was indicted for highway robbery at Crondale, and assauiting Timothy Hill,(note: Timothy Hill was with William's father and brother in stealing Sheep, see stories) and stealing from his person three half-crowns, and other monies. It was alleged in evidence that the prosecutor was at Farnham on the 3rd of April, and went to a public-house called the Bull and Butcher, when he fell in company with the prisoner, who having no money the prosecutor treated, and that he ( the prosecutor) got up to leave the house, when the prisoner offered his services to accompany him home to Ewshott, in the parish of Crondale, that after passing about a mile the prisoner got into a hop-garden and armed himself with the butt-end of a hop pole, and remarked to the prosecutor that if any one upset them, he had a good bludgeon and he would do some heavy work if they were stopped. They pursued their way till they came to a cross-road, where the prisoner wish him good night, and went away, but after he proceeded about 50 orr 60 yards, the prisoner pursued and felled him to the ground with the hop pole, and drew something across the kerchief on his neck, but did not cut it; he could not say what it was; he cried murder, and the prisoner knelt on his body, and rifled his pockets of all the money he had, consisting of three half-crowns, a shilling, two sixpences, and some coppers; he then threatened if he made the least noise; there were two men behind the hedge who would cut his theoat, and tear him limb from limb. The prisoner was apprehended with the bulk of the money on him.-Twelve months' imprisonment.
