Biography

Patrick Slone was born about 1757 in Halifax County, Virginia. He was the son of James Slone and Alice (Allen). Patrick would have moved with his parents to Bedford County, Virginia sometime between 1773-1776, where they settled on Maggotty (Maggodee) Creek. In 1786, this area became part of Franklin County.

Patrick was married at least twice. His first wife was probably Susannah McGrady, a daughter of Laughlin McGrady who lived in the same area by 1762 (Bedford Co. Surveyor's Book 2, p. 374). No marriage record has been located but we do have several records in which Patrick's wife was named Susannah. Patrick's original marriage probably occurred in Bedford County, probably around 1780. Susannah was likely the mother of all but the last two of Patrick's children. She apparently died after 1810. Patrick remarried to Malinda Owens in 1819 and had at least two daughters with her.

Patrick owned several tracts of land. By 1782 he was living on head branches of Gills Creek and probably very close to Laughlin McGrady. Sometime before the formation of Franklin Co., he acquired some land on Blackwater River close to the Hill & Co. iron works. And in 1806 he became the high bidder at an auction of 324 acres formerly belonging to William Thomas and adjoining the 150 acre home tract of his father, James Slone. This was probably his final residence.

The will of Patrick Slone was written 21 March 1827 and presented to the Franklin County, Virginia court on 3 December 1827. Executors were Hon. Nat. H. Claiborne John Bowman, Henry Carper and Mr John Hill. He named his wife Belinda and two youngest daughters Polly and Susan. Also named was his "wife's daughter Cathren Owins". Patrick's daughters were listed as: Cathren wife of Pleasant Sowal; Lener wife of Jacob Crook; Milly wife of William McGrady. His sons were Thomas, James, Jacob, William and John. Witnesses to the will were George H. Woods, James G. Sample, Walter C. Callaway, William Turnbull, James L. Sample. [1]

A Franklin County, Virginia Chancery Court case dated 1834 names the heirs of Patrick Sloane as: wife Mildred; children: Polly, Thomas, Jacob, William, James, John, Catherine married Pleasant Sowell, Milly married William McGrady, Christina married Jacob Crook. However, while p. 6 names Mildred as the wife, p. 7 corrects that name to Malinda[2]
