Note N7302His father arrived in America 3 Sept 1739 from Germany and settled in Berks Co, PA. About 1798 he moved to Clearfield Co, PA. Later he moved to Potter Twp, Centre Co, PA where his family made their home from 1814 until 1824. When Nicholas returned to Clearfield Co, PA after his son's death, he made his home with his son, Benjamin.
He was a carpenter and woodworker. He made wooden forks, spoons, bowls, butter bowls, doughtrays, chairs and the like.
Served in the American Revolution under the command of Colonel Authur St. Clair in the 62nd Pennsylvania Battalion and saw service in Quebec. After the war he married Elizabeth Volck at the First Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading, PA. They had four children. Elizabeth died in 1798. Nicholas moved to Bradford Twp., Clearfield County, PA with his son Benjamin. They were among the first settlers near Philipsburg. In 1799 he married Catherine Kline and they had eight children.
In FGS from Clearfield County Historical Society there is a statement that they resided in Maxatawny Twp., Berks County, PA. In Beers "Commemorative Biographies of Central Penna" page 811, "their son Benjamin Schmehl, married Elizabeth Weisor, daughter of Jonathan Weisor."
In "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots", Vol. 4, page 12 there is entry:
