Biography

Jacob was born about 1807. According to his son's Find A Grave memorial[1] Jacob Smelser was born about 1807, probably in the Overton, Tennessee area.

Research Notes

Information from his third great grandson, John Smeltzer Jr.: Jacob was married at least twice. We believe that his first wife passed in about 1851 or 1852 ... BUT ... there is a very good chance that they were either separated and/or divorced. We find him married again by about 1855 or 1856. There were children from both marriages. There is strong speculation that his first wife was Mary "Polly" ROWE .... daughter of Joseph ROWE and Betsy PLYMALE Rowe who were living next door to Jacob's family during the 1850 Federal (U.S.) Census in the Galesburg, IL area ..... If one reacts literally to the census takers form it appears as if Joseph ROWE is actually living in the home of Jacob SMELSER with wife "Polly" and that Betsy PLYMALE Rowe (Joseph's wife) is living "next door" with her children. We later find "Polly" married to another person (also from the Galesburg, IL area) and they move into Iowa near Washington. Additional information from John Smeltzer, Jr: Jacob seem to have passed about 1870 .... we believe he is last "seen" in the 1870 Iowa census for Washington County, IA living near his son David Clark SMELSER b. abt 1820 ..."

They are the same person ..... there was a transition from the preferred spelling of SMELSER (used for at least three generations) to SMELTZER with SOME (but not all) of the children of Jacob 1807's father. I am unaware of Jacob 1807 using / recording any spelling other than SMELSER .... his son James M. SMELSER / SMELTZER is buried under SMELTZER but has substantial records under SMELSER. Subsequent generations, including mine, have used SMELTZER. I have cousin descendants from siblings of Jacob 1807 who have NEVER used SMELTZER as the preferred spelling ... using ONLY SMELSER. And we have one proven (Y-DNA) line that used the spelling of SMELCER .... go figure.

Not sure how a merge is completed ???

John,

The profile managers for each profile need to okay the merge before it can be completed. If you still have the e-mail you received proposing the merge you can click on the link in the e-mail, below the table comparing the two, that says "approve the merge". If you don't have the e-mail, you can click on the link to "merge" that is further down on this page, below this "comments" section, in the section headed "Matches and Merges". The other profile manager hasn't yet okayed the merge, so you won't be able to complete it. But once you've okayed it, he will be able to complete it. You'll both end up as profile managers on the combined profile.

Also .... the Agnes YOAKUM piece is very much a conundrum .... there is a definite marriage between a Jacob SMELSER and Agnes YOAKUM. We just don't know the "Who's Who" of it all. We also know of an Ocee KERSHATT (Ocea CUSHATT/CASHATT) involved with the set of children beginning with Isaiah SMELSER b. 1801 who is married to Nancy Green HUSTON b. 1801 .... ending with David Clark SMELSER b. abt 1820.

We know Keziah SMELSER 1803 and Catherine SMELSER 1815 both had an mtDNA of U5b2a1a1 from solid FMS testing. Therefore ... their mother was also U5b2a1a1 ..... but our understanding at the moment essentially "ends" at that level. We have clues but only clues. No proof of WHO that represents in reality.

Agnes YOAKUM most likely is NOT the mother of Isaiah 1801 thru David Clark 1820 .... BUT Agnes could well have been the mother of a first set of children in that marriage. In 1801 Jacob (the father ... b. abt 1760) would be 38 to 41 ... hardly the time for the first set of children. However, the other known possibles were born in the 1772 to 1780 period .... a 20 year separation more or less. So there had to be at least two wives involved with Jacob 1760 (1763?) ....

John, the information you've included about which children belong to Agnes Yoakum probably belongs on either Agnes's profile or on her husband's profile. Comments are only sent to the profile manager for the profile where they're posted, which in this case is you. I think the people you want to discuss this with are the profile managers of Agnes' profile and Jacob's profiles. Please "reply" to this profile if you don't understand, or if I can help.
