Leonard Smelt was the son of Leonard Smelt and Ann Wastell.[1] He was baptised on 28 February 1658 at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire.[2]
The 1659 will of his grandfather John Wastell left him an annuity of £20 between the ages of 17 and 25 for his education.[3]
Leonard was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge on 23 September 1674. There appears to be no record of him obtaining a degree.[4] According to John Peile's Biographical Register of Christ's College he was officially in residence until 1677,[5] although on 6 May 1675 Leonard was admitted to Gray's Inn.[6]
Leonard is said to have squandered the Smelt family property and disinherited his eldest son.[5][7]
Marriage and Children
On 17 November 1679 Leonard married Grace Frankland, daughter of Sir William Frankland,[8][9][10] at Thirkleby, Yorkshire.[11] They had the following children:
Leonard, his eldest son,[12][13][14] born on 7 February 1683/4 and baptised at Thirkleby, Yorkshire on 11 February 1683/4[15][16]
Arabella, baptised at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 13 February 1685/6[17][18]
Anne, baptised at Thirkleby, Yorkshire on 31 December 1687[19][20]
William, baptised at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 10 January 1690/1,[21][22] and buried there on 11 September 1755[23] with a memorial inscription giving his age at death as 66[24]
John, baptised at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 20 October 1691[25]
Grace, baptised at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 4 December 1692[26]
Elizabeth,[27] baptised at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 6 January 1695/6,[28][29][30] who married Cornelius Cayley[31]
Death
Leonard was buried at Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire on 18 October 1710.[32][33]
Research Notes
Peile's Biographical Register of Christ's College confuses Leonard with his son of the same name.[5] So does Lipscomb's History and Antiquities of the County of Buckingham.[34]
ThePeerage.com wrongly gives Leonard's wife the first name Anne.[35]

Thanks for asking - that is very kind. He is one of my direct ancestors, so I am happy to adopt. I am assuming you are content, so I will use my WikiTree Leader powers to do so. I will leave you as a manager, but if you prefer not to remain one, I will let you sort that out.
Would you like to be profile manager, if so?
